If anything happened to this camera I would do this again.
This camera is my 1st foray into medium format photography and I am very pleased. The images are excellent and I simply purchased a used hand held meter from a photo shop. The 645 1000 or Pro model has metering functions, which, although would have added at least a couple of hundred to the price, would have been well spent. I weighed that in my decision and am not totally regretful that I went with the manual model.

I have a friend, a professional photographer who has worked for several major magazines, owned and used this model.

This is one awesome camera! For the price you just can't beat it.
Let me start by saying this is a great medium format film camera. It is rugged and well built with easy controls. With the variety of lens and accessories for the Mamiya m645 it is really easy to get hooked on it. This is a very heavy camera and a large one at that. Wearing it around your neck is close to impossible. There are some great things about this camera such as the cloth shutter which is pretty quiet for a camera this size. But there are some annoying things about this camera such as the thread size for the tripod mount. Overall though I would highly recommend this camera if you are just getting into medium format for it is relatively cheap and very durable. I hope this helps and happy shooting.

medium format bliss. the camera with pistol grip is amazing.
This is a solid medium format camera. The instruction manual was easy to find online and it operates perfectly (though there are some adjustments that have to be made when you incorporate the pistol grip). A quick youtube search teaches you how to load the film. I shot and developed a roll at home and it looked immaculate.

Special Notes: this camera takes wide format shots instead of square format. It also does not have a swappable back so if you were looking to shoot polaroids keep your eyes out for the later 645 models.

Great format and beautiful images.
I was initially going after the Contax 645, but just couldn't afford the $2k+ people were asking. So I went for the "poor mans Contax" and it's been great. I'm still learning it, but I love the medium format and the 645 format. It's beautiful and so much fun to use!
