The Mother-lode of Classic American TV Cartoons is Back With a Vengence!!!!
This dvd collection is a wonderful "Time machine" back to the 40's movie era and the 50's/early 60's tv episodes of the American quality animated cartoons we baby-boomers watched before school, and on Saturday weekend, or before church on Sundays. (Or sunday afternoons, when nothing else captivated our short attention spans.)
I purchased this collection for just this reason, and others. They are the "feel good" toons that immediately tickle our memories for we former kids. Today's kids would probably enjoy them for the smooth animation, and clear plotting of short stories (unlike the current asian-anime craze.)
Yes, SOME of these episodes have been released before on DVD and vhs. But these are the mother lode of the entire Harvey/Famous Studio/Paramount series. It contains all those cartoons we saw on "Matty mattel's Funday Funnies", and the original Harvey-Casper TV series with all the well known other movie characters-turned to TV animation like Little Audrey, Buzzy Crow, Herman mouse and Katnip,Baby Huey, Wendy the good witch, and also the "Modern Madcaps". As well, there are the music-animation and brief clips of other animated episodes in the series.
This collection is also organized into recurrent themes (Future/Outer space, fishing, scouting, swimming, south of the border fun, etc...). And the episodes are arranged like half-hour TV blocks. (There's about 19 hours of great toons on 4, double-sided disks.)
If you want a great way to introduce your young-ones (or grandkids) to Quality, American-made toons -- This Harvey Toons collection should be on the top of the list. These cartoons have long been at the heart of modern American culture, and it would be a shame if today's kids never saw examples of what made us proud in this country.Read full review

Harveytoons: The Complete Collection
The Harveytoons collection is marketed as the "Complete" collection. In reality, the set is far from complete. The dvd's contain edited shorts, culled from the Casper tv show, and NOT the original content or format of the theatrical released versions, with the original Paramount/Famous Studios open and closing titles. I purchased this collection, based on the pretense that this was the "Complete" collection, as indicated on the box.
I cannot understand why, if Sony went to the trouble of packaging Harveytoons, they would not do it right. I for one have come to expect great things from Boxed sets of Tv shows, and cartoons. Harveytoons misses the mark. I assumed that the set would be presented as the Looney Toons or Disney cartoon packages were- that is, complete, uncut, remastered shorts, let alone the misleading inference that this set was "complete".
There are no special features on the 4 double-sided discs, and the boxed set comes with absolutely no booklet or index sheet as to what is on the discs.
As special features go, it would have been a treat to hear from folks involved with Harveytoons, or Paramount, or at least include some background information about Harveytoons itself, and perhaps give us information about the animators, voice talent, musical scores, and the rest. (many voices used for Harveytoons, were voice artists used in other Paramount/Famous Studios cartoon series).
On the positive end, yes, it does bring back some long forgotten cartoons, and sort of recreates the 1/2 hour cartoon show that aired in the 60's. A few of the cartoons do have open and end titles, but are somewhat edited.
All in all, a huge dissapointment, considering the extent of the Harveytoons vast library of 'toon output, and the way that this collection was packaged and marketed.Read full review

Brought Back Memories
I read some really nitpicking reviews on other sites about the organization of this disc. It is pretty random, I don't know the chronological order of when eat cartoon was created and frankly don't care. It just 4 TWO Sided Discs, so technically HOURS and HOURS of Casper, Huey, Wendy and Catnip. There doesn't seem to be chapters either. You can just put on a disc and let it play and play and play and just when you think it is over, there is more on it.
The kids love watching cartoons. It is like I remember Saturday mornings in the 70s when you only had the 3 Networks and PBS to choose from. Well worth the price.
