This is a GPS you can grow to like.
I've had a handheld Garmin that I've used as an auto/RV GPS for 4 years. Before that I've used a Garmin aviation GPS in airplanes. This is my first dedicated auto GPS. I love the display on the 3450. I was worried that my 66 year old eyes wouldn't be able to see any detail on such a small screen but the nature of the display really helps me see everything I need to see. Turns are easier to find as it clearly shows all the streets in advance of a turn.

The map software doesn't have nearly all the businesses that are available. I was hoping it would be more robust than the handheld I had been using but I can't see much difference. The same is true of features and attractions. The menu's are hard to learn and some features like erasing a saved waypoint are really hard to find. You can change the volume but it isn't on screen. The only volume change available on the screen icon is mute.

The holder for the 3450 contains the power connection and the speaker. If you only need one, you are set and it is handy to have such a slim display to remove and move from place to place. I am using this in two vehicles, an SUV and a motor home. I needed two holders and getting the second was not easy. They don't stock them in stores. I found one here on e-Bay and had it mailed. You could snap the holder on and off of the mounting but that is going to wear out quickly. The mounting device which comes with the 3450 has a small suction cup which I find to be just about useless. When the windshield heats up - off comes the GPS. It is useless when laying face down on the dash! I ordered the friction mount which has a sticky substance on its base. I'm skeptical about its lifetime. The information with it indicate it could be moved but I would guess about 3 or 4 moves and the sticky surface would be useless. So now I have two mounts, holders and power cords and the only thing I move from one vehicle to another is the display itself. Now it is handy but I had to assemble all this a piece at a time.

I have been using the 3450LM for five weeks and have driven from St. Louis to the Olympic Peninsula in Washington and on Vancouver Island in Canada. We have been in small towns and large cities. We have driven highways, state and local roads, even park and forest service roads and all were well documented on the 3450. We have made numerous stops at remote locations, parks, post offices, shops, stores, fuel stations, golf courses, and street addresses. If I can get a street address for a business it will get me there if it doesn't have it listed by name. Routing is generally what I would travel if I planned the route myself. Once in a while we have chosen an alternate route and most times the 3450 will quickly reroute. Occasionally it will persistently try to direct us to U turns before accepting the new routing. I find this far easier to use than the handheld that I had been using. My wife even grudgingly admitted that she likes it also! I am happy with my purchase and would buy it again knowing what I do now.Read full review
