About this product
- Product InformationThe ruggedly constructed, durable C-4000 2-channel pre-amp is best described as a high-performance pre-amp with a high slew rate and precise phono equalization. Its dual tone controls offer you remarkable control flexibility while you enjoy the lowest to highest frequencies with a response range from 5Hz to 200 kHz. The C-4000‘s Auto Correlator noise reduction system eliminates low frequencies from 200 Hz to 20 kHz, providing crystal clear sound. Equipped with a Sonic Hologram Generator, the Carver C-4000 overcomes the limits of the two-channel stereo medium and normal room acoustics to deliver an excellent three-dimensional listening experience. The adjustable treble selectivity is especially useful when it comes to recording.

Holgraphic imaging interesting but won't keep you satisfied for long
I bought one of these beasts new in 1985. At first they are fascinating with the huge holographic image that they portray when speakers are place equidistant to the listener. Pink Floyd The Wall is amazing. But the actual sound (instruments) are colored and artificial sounding. I ended up purchasing an Audio Research SP9 MkII which sounded MUCH better and more natural. I never quite figured out the auto correlater and peak unlimiter. they did not do much in my system. For true audiophiles you wont' be satisfied with these sonic timing tricks because the sound is degraded, but they are nonetheless a fascinating piece of equipment. I also owned a small carver cube amp I blew when I turned up my Pioneer CS 905 speakers also. Carver was musical genius. I put him in the same catgory as Bose although most of Bose fame was because of relentless marketing. Read full review

Carver C-4000 Pre-amp with flexibility
Excellent Rock solid preamp ! All the bells & whistles are great but you don't have to use them . Lots of switched & un-switched AC plugs ...very musical sound which becomes a tic more clinical when using some of the manipulations. MC cartridge input (with variable step up ). Sounds great !

Carver C 4000 Preamp
The Carver preamp is unique for having holography, autocorrelation and time delay circuits. If you are of fan of these technologies, then Carver preamp is for you. If not, there are better preamps. The biggest problem with Carver products is that quality is variable, either it works flawlessly or you have problem, problems. Carver was a very small company, so to cut cost, quality control was just not there. This preamp was very expensive when it was new, with a msrp about $1000 (often sold for a much lower price). So a bargain if you are into old vintage stereo equipment.

Musical characteristics surpassed only by a live performance!
My purchase of this preamp was sort of gilding the lily, for at this point I have run out of enhancements to add to my sound system. I should explain that I have been using a Carver C-4000 preamp for about thirty years, and this one is a backup. Except that the volume control is somewhat scratchy for lack of my applying of an effective contact lubricant, the performance of this jewel has been flawless for over three decades. It is by far the most versatile preamp in my experience, and the high frequencies are capable of causing nosebleeds. My musical preference is classical, and with the Sonic Hologram stereo imaging processor and Peak Unlimiter dynamic range recovery system properly set, the right speakers and power amplification will deliver music only marginally to be surpassed by a live performance. My entire system consists of two Bohlender Graebener RD 40s along with two Carver AL III+ bass units with Infinity Kappa Perfect10.1 10" drivers as main speakers, a Velodyne SPL 8 Subwoofer, a Martin Logan Encore TF center channel speaker, and two Bohlender Graebener NEO 8 rear speakers. All this is driven by two Carver M1.0t and two Carver M0.5t power amps, with a Carver SD/A 490t and SD/A 370 CD players, a Phase Linear 8000 Series Two Turntable, Pioneer RT-701 Reel to Reel Tape Deck, Pioneer CT-F1000 Cassette Deck, and a Carver CT-17 Tuner/Preamplifier providing program source input through a Carver DPL 33 Dolby Processor. A Beauty and a Beast. Great sound, looks and performance with lots of cool!
Vintage Carver audio gear is some of the most desirable electronics available from the "golden age" between the late 60's to about the mid 80's. It was so well engineered for excellent audio quality and was built to last. This combination has left Carver with a loyal following of dedicated audiophiles. Audio forums like theCarversite.com have members taht help each other maintain and even improve their Carver gear. There are many other audio forums that also have groups of Caver followers. Bob Carver was the genius behind the brand and he pioneered many unique and useful innovations in high-end home entertainment stereo electronics. The C-4000 may be the falgship of the line and is the "Swiss army knife" of preamps. It features nearly all of the sound processing ideas Bob Carver had come up with back then. It's a massive component and I find the Carver C-1 to be a more manageable sized preamp. The C-1 is also slightly sweeter sounding to my ears, and a bit more musical. The C-4000 has many virtues and has a very accurate sound that to me is almost to the point of being clinical. The style of this old Carver stuff has help it maintain it's popularity as well. It's beautiful, timeless and if it's not already, should be in the museum of modern art. If the price is right you could do much worse than a C-4000 preanp. In the future I predict that it will become one of the most popular and collectable pieces of all vintage Carver audio equipment. Read full review
