Nice addition to my studio
I am a happy owner of the Dual Processor 2.66 Dual Core 1st generation Mac Pro (1,1).
These machines are getting up there in age. EEK! 3+ years old in computer terms is ancient. You can get something that's much faster, but these 1st gen Mac Pro's can still pull their considerable weight (40+ lbs).
If you must have the newest and fastest these aren't for you. I'm using my 2-2.66GHz Dual core Mac Pro as a second machine for rendering and doing some other crunching while I keep working on my main 2-2.8GHz Quad core Mac Pro.
I have installed a Sata card from OWC to use the extra Sata ports on the motherboard. I added a Matrox MX02 card to use this Mac Pro as an injest station for video production. I also added a CompressHD Matrox card to speed up h.264 compression. You can't get that functionality from an iMac (even a brnad new Core i7 one)and that's one of the reasons I like this machine so much - its expandability.
The great thing is you can add more RAM or faster/more hard drives to give these machines more life. I just added a new SSD drive to the mix to be my start up drive and am pleased with the new speed.
The options this Mac Pro gives you really make it a strong contender if you're looking for something that's a little cheaper than the brand new models. There's still plenty of tread on these tires even as the machine moves on from the Applecare years to year 4 and hopefully many more to come.Read full review

Yosemite in the house
the yosemite is a good program for your old mac pro 2006 but i plan to load it with my pro tools programs to upgrade and expand with a good duplication of the drive to hold at least 2tb of space in which i think would keep my mind working for some time

Outstanding computer for the price.
The computer was in amazingly good shape given the the fact that it was used, and the age of the computer. It looked new. Everything worked. I bought this machine to find out if OS X / Apple would serve my purposes. I didn't want to buy an expensive new Mac and find out I couldn't use the computer for the job I had in mind. The computer filled the bill wonderfully, and is a useful piece of hardware. I would recommend this computer to anyone, with the warning that this computer will not support the later versions of OS X. For common tasks, and the jobs most people will be doing this computer is a wonderful computer at a very reasonable price. Check the software you intend to use, and see if it requires an OS X version later than 10.7.5. If it does I'd look at a different machine, but I think you'd have to be doing something rather unusual for that to be a problem. At the time of this writing the current version of OS X is 10.11.Read full review

Still good computer for all sorts of different tasks.
For a first generation Macintosh Pro replacing the G5 line it still is plenty fast and holds it own against brand new computers. Plus there are tricks to install the latest MacOS's on the machine. I use it for web design and music production. It was a bit tricky to clean but in the end it is a very decent computer especially for the price I paid which was around $160 for a computer that used to cost thousands. If your looking for an upgrade from the older Apple G4 G5 series this is worth the money spent.
