The mid-sized Volvo XC90 SUV, along with the XC60 sedan and the XC70 wagon, falls into Volvo's modern Cross Country collection. It leads SUV sales thanks to its attractive interior, specially-tuned sports chassis, and sophisticated curves. This seven-seat vehicle was designed with performance, passenger safety, and environmental responsibility in mind and it has even better fuel economy for the 2011 model year. Independent auto enthusiasts rate it a best buy in the luxury SUV category.
The spacious XC90 features a new crossover design, so it's a blend of a capacious SUV and a more streamlined sedan. It's engineered to accept regular unleaded gasoline and uses an estimated 17 mpg for combined city/highway driving. Powerful engine options include a basic 2.5-liter turbocharged inline 5 engine with 210 HP, a 2.9-liter twin turbocharged inline 6 engine with 272 HP, and a V8 with 292 HP. The cars are assembled at production plants in four locations: Torslanda, Sweden; Samutprakarn, Thailand; Shah Alam, Malaysia; and Jakarta, Indonesia.
The Volvo XC90 is categorized into two generations: one existing and one upcoming. The first generation includes cars made from the 2003 launch through the present. The 2.5-liter and 2.9-liter engines were issued from the start, and the V8 was added in 2005. The vehicle's interior was upgraded in 2007, and the front was restyled that year as well. The second generation was set to launch in 2010 but has been delayed until 2012. Expected upgrades include even better handling plus hybrid technology for better fuel efficiency. Meanwhile, recent model years have seen minor cosmetic upgrades.
Volvo XC90 trims currently available include the 3.2, the 3.2 R-Design, and the V8. All cars feature three rows of seating and the second and third rows can easily be folded down for storage. Each model features Volvo's signature safety features: side airbags, rollover protection, Park Assist, and more. These models are especially favored with the Volvo On-Call system. This remote-activation system even lets drivers activate the car's climate control via a text message. The XC90 is available in about a dozen good-looking solid and metallic colors ranging from Passion Red to Electric Silver.
The XC90 SUV has rapidly become a strong seller. Its capacious body, relatively good fuel economy, and industry-leading safety features make it a top choice among luxury car buyers. The XC90 consistently earns high ratings in safety tests by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety or IIHS, a US-based agency. Additionally, the car received the coveted BOVY (Best Overall Value of the Year) Award" from IntelliChoice for 2011 and has been dubbed Motor Trend's "SUV of the Year" and "North American Car of the Year".
