About the 2004 Volvo C70

The Volvo C70 is a luxury car sold only as a two-door convertible coupe. The C70 has a front engine design and front-wheel drive. Volvo has set a reasonable price for the C70, making it an affordable convertible sports car. While the C70's five cylinder engine is outgunned by some of the newer competing models, it is powerful enough for most entry-level sports car buyers. Although the C70 has unremarkable performance, the model makes up for it with a refined interior and comfortable ride.

The C70 has a 2.5-liter, inline five-cylinder engine for power. It is turbocharged and produces 227 horsepower along with 236 pound-feet of torque. The EPA predicts the C70 will average 19 miles per gallon in the city and 28 on the highway. Combined fuel economy is an estimated 22 miles per gallon. The C70 seats four. Trunk space is 12.8 cubic feet with the top up, but declines to six cubic feet if the top is retracted. Volvo primarily designed the C70 in Sweden. Vehicle assembly takes place in Uddevalla, Sweden.

Volvo produced the C70's first generation from 1997 to 2006. The first generation included a soft convertible top instead of a hard top. Chassis flexing and a lack of rear visibility were frequent complaints about the model. Volvo switched to a hard top with the second generation in 2006 to address the complaints. Volvo also developed a rollover protection system to protect occupants in the event of a rollover accident. A modest update of the C70 came with the 2011 model year. Sales were initially below expectations, but began climbing in 2010.

The C70 is available with only one trim level. All C70s have a retractable hardtop roof. Standard safety features include anti-lock brakes, stability control, and automatic deployment roll bars to protect against rollover accidents. Leather upholstery, powered accessories, and an audio system with eight speakers are standard interior features. Other audio features are HD radio, satellite radio, and a USB jack for MP3 players. Bluetooth capabilities are standard as well. Volvo offers five main optional packages. The Multimedia package upgrades the audio system to a Dynaudio surround sound unit with fourteen speakers. The Dynamic package has 18-inch alloy wheels, xenon headlights, and a sport steering wheel with different inlays. The Convenience package installs key-free entry and ignition. A wind blocker and navigation unit are some of the standalone options.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the C70 a Good rating for front and side crash safety. IntelliChoice named the C70 as the Best Overall Value Luxury Convertible. Independent automotive reviewers have enjoyed the C70's interior quality and ride comfort. Criticism has been focused on the C70's performance and lack of horsepower. ... View more
