About the 1988 Volvo 740

The Volvo 740 is part of the 700 Series that was produced from 1984 to 1993. As part of the 700 Series, the 740 was the lower-end version of the 760 that was produced from 1982 to 1990. This does not mean the 740 was inferior to its counterpart; it was actually produced with more style than the previous 200 Series, and the 4" in the title initially referred to its four-cylinder engine.

Under the hood, the 740 was equipped with a standard 2.0 liter I4 engine at its base level; however, a larger 2.3 liter turbo I4 was available that produced 173 horsepower. This powerful engine was actually available in the base model of the 760 Series. Also available on the 740 were optional four-speed automatic and four- and five-speed manual transmissions. The car was marketed in both four-door sedan and five-door estate body styles, each one providing enough room for four passengers.

As a 740 model, it had limited history as part of the 700 Series of Volvo automobiles. It began production in 1984 and ran for nine years alongside the 760 and 780. Each model in the 700 Series offered something new to the buyer, such as the seven engine options on the 760 to the powerful 2.8 liter V6 in the 780. The 740 received a minor facelift during its production run, having new composite headlamps and newly added 780-style tail lights.

The last 740 model produced was revised slightly with new ABS brakes across each trim level, as well a new locking differential. The base sedan comes equipped with cloth seating, power steering, air conditioning, power windows and locks, and AM/FM cassette player. Driver's side airbag, power brakes, 15-inch wheels, power heated mirrors and tinted glass are also standard. Optional packages include leather seating, special factory paint and alloy wheels.

The 740 was the base model trim level, which was then followed by the 740 GL and 740 GLE. The 740 SE and 740 GLT rounded out the upscale models, while the 740 Turbo was the most-equipped model in the lineup. After 1986, the 740 began taking bits and pieces of the 760 and 780 and adding it to its overall packaging. In 1992, IntelliChoice named the Volvo 740 4Dr Wagon the Best Deal Winner in its class. What the 740 lacked in awards, it made up with a powerful engine and loads of options. ... View more
