The Volvo 240 is a front-engined, rear-wheel drive family car known for its reliability, spaciousness, and exceptional safety features. It proved to be an extremely popular car, and became Volvo's best selling model from 1975 to 1982.
The Volvo 240 was designed by Jan Wilsgaard and built by Volvo Cars in many places worldwide, including Australia, Belgium, Canada, Italy, Malaysia and, of course, Sweden.
The last models produced in 1993 came standard with four-cylinder, 2.3 liter engines that produce 114 horsepower and either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. Anti-lock brakes were available as an option beginning in 1990. Although automatic transmission models lacked ample acceleration, all models proved to have smooth rides and ample space for cargo and passengers. Its 15.8 gallon tank and excellent fuel economy is perfect for long-distance road trips.
The Volvo 140 was introduced in the fall of 1974. Intended as a replacement for the aging 140 series, it shares many of its body styling features. The major differences between the 240 and 140 are of a mechanical nature, with the 240 adding improved suspension, steering, braking, large front and rear crumple zones to improve crash safety. The 240's engine saw significant improvements as well.
The 240 was extremely popular, with Volvo selling over 2.8 million units worldwide. Guaranteed by Volvo to last 19.3 years, it continued to be produced even though its cousin, the Volvo 260, was replaced by the 700 series. The 700 series was supposed to replace the 240 as well, but the two ended up being produced in tandem for some time due to the 240's popularity. The 240 and 700 enjoyed a spell of overlapped production until the 240 ceased to be produced in May 1993, when it was replaced by the Volvo 850.
The successful Volvo 240 was initially available in six variations (242L, 242DL, 244DL, 244GL, 245L, 245DL) as a coupe, sedan, and station wagon. Early models retained the same 4-cylinder engine used in the 140 series. A new four-cylinder, 2.1 liter engine was later released for the DL models. The GL models were produced with larger engines. All models were available with a four-speed manual or three-speed automatic transmission. Fuel injection was standard on all models sold in the United States.
The 1993 Volvo 240 four-door sedan model won IntelliChoice's Best Overall Value Winner" in its class. Despite lacking the luxury of some of its competitors, the Volvo 240 possesses durability and ruggedness which may be of greater benefit to certain consumers.
