About the Volkswagen Passat

The Volkswagen Passat is a mid-size sedan or station wagon. It is a front-engine, front-wheel drive car and has four-doors. An all-wheel drive version of the Passat is also available. The Passat seats five passengers and has ample cargo space that can be further increased if the rear seat is folded down. The Passat is designed as a family car and can accommodate a family with two children comfortably in back, though it can safely accommodate three.

The Passat features a turbocharged 2.0-liter VR6 engine capable of producing 200 horsepower. It comes with anti-lock brakes and electronic traction control and stability program. Multiple transmission options are available, including a five-speed automatic and five- and six-speed manual, and it comes standard with cruise control. Vehicle speed-proportional power steering is also standard. The Passat features 35.8 cubic feet of cargo space when the rear seat is up, and this increases to 61.8 cubic feet when the seat is folded down. EPA estimated fuel economy for the Volkswagen Passat is 25mpg/city and 31mpg/highway.

Volkswagen debuted the Passat in 1973 as a two- or four-door sedan and a three- or five-door station wagon. Since then, the Passat has undergone five redesigns, the most recent occurring in 2005 when Volkswagen debuted the new Passat at the Geneva Motor Show. With this redesign, the Passat became available as a four-wheel drive vehicle. It was marketed as the Passat sedan or the Passat Estate, a station wagon. In 2008, Volkswagen introduced a four-door coupe, the Passat CC, that has a top speed of 136.7 mph. Volkswagen made some minor changes for the 2010 model year, and a new production model of the Passat debuted in January 2011 as part of Vollkswagen's 2012 line. All American models of the car are currently assembled at Volkswagen's Chattanooga, Tennessee plant.

Many features and upgrades are available on the Passat, including heated seats and intelligent driver front and passenger front airbags. A trip computer displays average fuel consumption, speed, and fuel economy. An RDS audio system with eight speakers, satellite radio capability, and a CD player that reads MP3 formats is included, and a sun roof adds to the feeling of luxury. The Passat also comes with a rear window defroster and heated door mirrors. The car comes with roof rails and an electric, sliding glass sunroof.

In 2008, the Passat Estate was named winner of the Practical Caravans category of the Towcar of the Year Awards. It has also been named a low cost to own car by a number of diverse publications, including Edmund's and U.S. World and News Report, and Motor Trend called Passat a joy to drive". It was the AutoPacific 2006 Vehicle Satisfaction winner and was featured in AutoWeek's 2008 Buyer's Guide. ... View more
