With its rugged towing capabilities and room for seven to eight passengers, the Toyota Sequoia is a full-size SUV that can meet a wide range of needs. For more than 10 years, it has been Toyota's largest full-size SUV. With four-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive available, the Sequoia is versatile enough to make virtually anyone happy. A 4.6-liter V8 and a 5.6-liter V8 are both available; both are paired with a six-speed automatic. Not surprisingly, there's plenty of interior space here with the second and third rows folded down, the Sequoia boasts a cargo capacity of 121 cubic feet.
The Sequoia's two engines are both exceptionally powerful. The 4.6-liter V8 produces 310 horsepower and 327 pound-feet of torque; the 5.6-liter V8 gets an incredible 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet. When outfitted with the right package, this brawny SUV has a towing capacity of up to 7,400 pounds. Rear-wheel drive versions of the Sequoia get the best fuel economy ratings. The 4.6-liter configuration gets 14 mpg in the city, 20 mpg on the freeway and 16 mpg combined, while the 5.6-liter V8 gets 14/18/15. The Sequoia was designed in Japan and is assembled at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana plant in Princeton, Indiana.
Appearances at several car shows in 1999 and 2000 paved the way for the Sequoia's debut as a 2001 model. It was largely based on the Tundra and was available in two trims SR5 and Limited. A four-speed transmission was the only option. A mild refresh in 2005 added LED back-lit gauges and a five-speed automatic. The second-generation Sequoia, which premiered at the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2007, included a reworked design that was based on the new Tundra. An optional 5.7-liter V8 was also added, along with the Platinum trim.
Top-notch ergonomics, exceptional material quality and plenty of storage bins give the interior of the Toyota Sequoia plenty of advantages. Its second row of seats can slide forward and backward, which adds to its functionality. The base SR5 trim includes everything from heated side mirrors to triple-zone climate control. The top-of-the-line Platinum trim adds heated and cooled front seats, heated second row seats and adaptive shock absorbers. Many drivers opt for the rear-seat entertainment system and second-row captain's chairs as options.
The Sequoia has garnered plenty of praise throughout its run. It hit the ground running by being nominated for North American Truck of the Year at the North American International Auto Show in 2001. It was named as a Consumer Guide Best Buy in 2005 and 2006. In 2005, Intellichoice named the Toyota Sequoia as the Best Full-Size SUV. Most recently, J.D. Power and Associates listed the Sequoia as the Most Dependable Large Multi-Activity Vehicle for 2010.
