The Scion xB is an attractive 5-door compact hatchback wagon. Interior space is limited, but the new bucket seats in the recent models add more comfort and space to this stylish vehicle. The economy-smart xB is designed with Generation Y in mind, mixing together a unique fresh style and fuel efficiency that appeals to members of this generation. Featuring a four-cylinder 2.4-liter dual overhead-cam engine, the xB boasts the same intelligent Variable Valve Timing that is used in the tC model.
Designed and manufactured in Kanegasaki, Isawa, Iwate, Japan, the Scion xB is designed to seat five people. With 158 horsepower at 6,000 RPMs, the performance for this compact vehicle is good. Also advantageous is the torque, which is higher than similar cars in its class, totaling 162 at 4,000 RPMs. Front-wheel drive provides for easy handling and good traction in inclement weather. Surprisingly, the good power specs don't negatively impact fuel efficiency. The xB averages 24 mpg overall, with 28 mpg on the highway and 22 mpg in the city.
In 2004, the first Scion xB hit the Toyota showroom floors, attracting attention with its unique shape and style. The original models were much boxier in their shape; the new model is larger, providing more room for passenger comfort. Newer models have more horsepower and torque than the original xB. Recent additional changes to the vehicle include side airbags. In the IIHS front crash test, the xB received a good rating; the side impact test was rated poorly, warranting the added side airbags.
Value is one of the standard concepts designers use for the xB, which is available in either automatic or five-speed manual transmission. Several colors are available to choose from. As a mono spec vehicle, the xB features a choice of only transmission type and color. All models come with generous factory standards, such as an iPod jack and converter. The upscale factory features don't stop there; power mirrors, steering, windows and doors are all standard. Anti-lock brakes with electronic force distribution are included. To make the Scion xB versatile enough to drive on ice, Vehicle Stabilization Control was added, as well as traction control.
As one of the most efficient hatchbacks, the Scion xB has earned several awards recently. It was named one of the Top 10 Cars for Kids in Car Seats" by Edmunds. The same company also put the xB in their "Top 10 Least Expensive Hatchbacks & Wagons In 2010" list. With the new side airbags installed, the vehicle earned The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's "Top Safety Pick 2011;" as well as "Top Safety Pick For Small Cars". TBB named the Scion xB as one of "The 10 Coolest Cars Under $18,000" and "2009 Best Resale Value for Top 10 Models".
