About the 1991 Lincoln Town Car

Introduced in 1981, the Town Car became the signature luxury sedan offered by Lincoln, which is a division of the Ford Motor Company. From 1981 to 2010, the Town Car was sold under the Lincoln-Mercury brand; however, that all changed in 2010 when Mercury was discontinued and Lincoln took over sole rights to production. The success of the Lincoln Town Car is due to its replacement of the early Lincoln Continental that ran from 1970 to 1979.

The Modular V8 engine of the 2003 model year carried over to subsequent models and produced 239 horsepower and 287 foot-pounds of torque at 4,100 rpm. The Town Car was designed to fit four passengers comfortably within its spacious and luxurious interior. Wixom, Michigan is the primary location for the Town Car's assembly, and St. Thomas, Ontario began assembling the vehicle in 2008. The car has evolved from the same boxy design of the Continental to the sleek and elegant luxury sedan it is today.

The first generation began in 1981 and ran until 1989. During that time, it was offered as a four-door sedan and a two-door coupe; however, the coupe was dropped at the start of the second generation. By the third generation in 1998, the Town Car developed a smooth and rounded new front end and redesigned interior with seat controls and wood trim on the door panels. Unfortunately, the Town Car is set to discontinue after 2011 but will remain in production for use as a limousine.

The Signature Limited Edition contains a Continental Edition package that is available on the 2010 models and features a new dual exhaust, 17-inch chrome wheels and new badging. Inside, the interior features new embroidered seats and floor mats. The 2005 steering wheel facelift carried through to later models, including the new gauge meter, speedometer and tachometer from the 2006 model.

The Lincoln Town Car has received honorable mentions from reviewers in the auto industry since its introduction to the market. Forbes Magazine complimented the Town Car on its comfort package and called it one of the best cars to be chauffeured in". The 1990 model earned the Lincoln Town Car the Motor Trend Car of the Year Award, even though the same award was included in the Poorly Chosen Car of the Year by Car and Driver. The 2010 model earned the Lowest Maintenance Costs Award in its class from IntelliChoice. ... View more
