About the 1988 Land Rover Range Rover

The Land Rover Range Rover is a luxury SUV sold only with a four-door body style. It combines a front engine design with four-wheel drive. The Range Rover has a reputation for all-terrain performance and interior luxury. The current model maintains the Range Rover's traditional strengths. However, the vehicle's base price is high and it has a history of reliability problems. The Range Rover also seats only five people and has a smaller cargo capacity than its competitors.

Range Rovers are powered by a 5.0-liter, V8 engine. The HSE trim has a 375 horsepower version of the engine. It produces 375 pound-feet of torque. The Supercharged trim's engine puts out 510 horsepower and 461 pound-feet of torque. The EPA estimates that both models will average 12 mpg in city driving and 18 mpg on the highway. A Range Rover seats five people and can tow up to 7,700 pounds when fully equipped. Land Rover assembles the Range Rover in Solihull, England.

Land Rover did not introduce the first generation Range Rover in 1970 as a luxury SUV; it had a spartan interior and lacked passenger amenities. Land Rover manufactured the first generation until 1996. Starting with the third generation in 2002, the Range Rover began incorporating more luxury features. The interior was redesigned with an emphasis on comfort. The 2010 Range Rover received a minor refresh. Reviews of the Range Rover have varied. Some reviewers enjoy the Range Rover's luxury, but others have criticized its high price and poor reliability. Sales have been up and down over the last decade.

The Range Rover is sold with HSE or Supercharged trim. The HSE trim includes 19-inch wheels, an air suspension and electric-locking rear differential. The HSE Luxury package upgrades the wheels to 20-inch versions, changes all of the seats to heated models and upgrades to leather. The Supercharged trim has a different engine, all of the HSE and HSE Luxury's options and adaptive suspension damping. The Supercharged trim is eligible for the Autobiography or Autobiography Black packages. The Autobiography package has adaptive cruise control, an audio system with 19 speakers and a DVD system for the passengers. Some of the Autobiography's options can be purchased for the HSE trim. The Autobiography Black package is a limited edition that includes 20-inch wheels and unique exterior styling.

R.L. Polk & Co. gave the 2009 Range Rover their Polk Automotive Loyalty Award in the Luxury Sport Utility Category. The Range Rover has also won their Prestige SUV Awards in 2004 through 2006. Independent automotive reviewers have complimented the Range Rover's mix of interior luxury and performance in off-road conditions. Criticism has typically been aimed at the Range Rover's reliability issues and high price. ... View more
