The Kia Sedona is a seven passenger minivan with a fuel-efficient, V6 engine and a six-speed automatic transmission. It is rated for a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds with the available trailer hitch. The 3.5-liter engine on the 2011 model produces 271 hp and 248 foot-pounds of torque. The current Kia Sedona is an agile and powerful family vehicle with an emphasis on comfort and safety.
Seating and cargo features are well thought out. The first and second row seats consist of two captains chairs, with enough space between the seats to give passengers some elbow room. The third row bench seat folds flat into the floor and has a 60/40 split for a variety of cargo options. A conversation mirror" allows the front-seat passengers to keep an eye on what is happening in the back of the car.
Designed in South Korea, the Sedona is made at Kia's Sohari Plant. It is sold in Australia and the UK as the Kia Carnival. Early models appeared in 1998, but lacked some of the power features offered by other minivan manufacturers. Some considered it underpowered and overweight. This changed with the release of the second generation in 2006. Engine power and fuel efficiency were significantly improved to 271 hp and an EPA rating of 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.
While the first generation Sedona was one of Kia's best selling cars, it had competition from the likes of the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna, as well as minivans from Ford and Chrysler. The current generation of the Sedona is ready to compete in any arena. A new 3.5-liter, V6 engine produces 271 hp, compared to 195 hp for older models. Efficiency has also improved, with the new engine estimated to get 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. The shorter wheelbase option, which was available in the first generation models, has been discontinued. The Sedona is now available only in the longer-wheelbase model.
The Sedona is available in two trim options. The LX has a lower price, but still comes with an impressive set of standard features. These include separate air-conditioning for the front and rear, bluetooth and a six-speaker audio system. An optional power package for the LX includes dual power sliding doors and a rear camera display. The EX standard package includes power seats in the front row; power sliding doors and tailgate; and a rear camera display and backup warning system. Also available for the EX are a navigation package, luxury package and entertainment package featuring rear-seat DVD.
The 2011 Sedona was named Best Minivan by US News and World. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the 2010 model a 5-star safety rating. Safety is not an option on the Sedona it is standard along with power and family-friendly comfort.
