The Jeep Liberty is a product of Chrysler's Jeep brand and is a compact SUV designed to be a replacement for the Cherokee. The Liberty is like many Jeep products in that it has good off-road capabilities. This vehicle has been praised for its ability to withstand rough terrain and its appealing design, but many are disappointed in its fuel economy and overall performance.
This four-door SUV is able to seat five people. The Jeep Liberty has a 3.7-liter V6 engine, which is capable of producing 210 horsepower, and can tow up to 5,000 pounds. The Liberty has worse fuel economy than some similar vehicles, rated at 15 to 16 city miles and 21 to 22 highway miles per gallon of fuel, with a fuel tank that holds 19.5 gallons. The Jeep Liberty is sold in the United States as well as in several other countries, and in some countries, it is known as the Jeep Cherokee. The Liberty is currently produced in Cairo, Egypt and Valencia, Carabobo, Venezuela as well as Toledo, Ohio.
The Jeep Liberty first appeared in 2002. During this first generation, both gas and diesel engine models were introduced. The diesel model was eventually discontinued because of new emission standards. This was the first Jeep product to have rack and pinion steering. The second generation began with the 2008 Jeep Liberty. This new generation featured an almost rectangular appearance and more features than previous models.
The 2011 Jeep Liberty offers three main trim levels: Sport, Renegade, and Limited. The Sport level includes the Liberty Sport, Jet Sport, and Sport 70th Anniversary. The Limited level includes the Limited Edition, Jet Limited, and Limited 70th Anniversary. All trims are available as either a four-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive vehicle, except the Renegade, which is only available in four-wheel drive. The Sport is the entry-level model, and provides a few features like keyless-entry and satellite radio. The Limited trim adds heated seats, leather upholstery, Bluetooth, and other extras. The Renegade is focused on off-road capabilities, and has all-terrain tires and an improved four- wheel drive system.
The Jeep Liberty has achieved some popularity and earned its share of recognition. The 2009 Liberty won the AutoPacific Ideal Vehicle Award. It also earned a five-star rating for frontal and side-impact crash testing. This was largely due to its multistage frontal airbags and supplemental side-curtain airbags. In 2010, the Kelley Blue Book named the entire Jeep brand Top Domestic Brand".
