The Jeep Compass is a vehicle produced by the Jeep division of Chrysler. This crossover SUV is unlike many of the other Jeep products in that its design is not heavily based on its off-road capabilities, although the current model does have an optional off-road drivetrain. It also does not have the rugged" appearance typically associated with a Jeep. The Compass is generally considered affordable and has good fuel economy for this class of vehicle. The Jeep Compass has been criticized for its interior materials.
This compact, four-door SUV is capable of seating five people. It contains a four-cylinder engine and can tow up to 2000 pounds. The Jeep Compass has relatively good fuel efficiency and is rated for 21 to 23 city miles and 26 to 29 highway miles per gallon of fuel. This SUV has a 13.5 or 13.6-gallon fuel tank. The Compass is currently assembled in Belvidere, Illinois.
The Jeep Compass made its first appearance at the 2006 North American International Auto Show. This vehicle was more like a traditional SUV than the company's previous products. Until the 2011 model, few changes were made to the overall design. The current model has a slightly different appearance, better handling, and more options than its predecessors do. It has been announced that the Jeep Compass, along with the closely related Jeep Liberty, will be discontinued in 2012.
The 2011 Jeep Compass is available in four different trim levels. Front-wheel and four-wheel drive are both available for every trim. The current trims are the Jeep Compass Sport, Latitude, Limited, and Limited 70th Anniversary. The Sport is the entry-level model. The Sport is the cheapest model, but it only includes a few basic features. The Latitude has heated front seats, reclining rear seats, and audio controls on the steering wheel. The Limited adds more features, such as an auto-dimming review mirror, adjustable lumbar support on the driver's seat, and Sirius Satellite Radio. The Limited 70th Anniversary includes these along with premium leather-trimmed seats, luxury front and rear floor mats, and other extra features.
The Compass has received some recognition. In 2010, it won the AutoPacific Ideal Vehicle Award in the Compact Crossover SUV category. The affordable price and great fuel economy of the Jeep Compass have made it a practical buy. The recent improvements have increased the value of this SUV, but overall it has had trouble competing in regards to its performance and interior.
