In the world of family-friendly crossover SUVs, the mid-size Ford Edge is a definite standout. This five-door, five-passenger vehicle handles especially well, providing ample interior space and nimble steering capabilities. A reliable 3.5-liter V6 engine is the backbone of the model, but a newly released 2.0-liter EcoBoost I4 had been making waves. Front-wheel drive is standard, but most people opt for the more versatile all-wheel drive, which is available on all trims except for the base model. Thirty-nine cubic feet of cargo space is available when the rear seats are up; by folding them down, a total cargo capacity of 69 cubic feet is opened up.
All Ford Edge vehicles are produced at the Oakville Assembly Complex in Oakville, Ontario, Canada. Like other Fords, the Edge was primarily designed at Ford's world headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan. In terms of power, the standard 3.5-liter V6 produces 285 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel drive 3.5-liters boast fuel economy ratings of 19 mpg in the city, 27 mpg on the highway and 22 mpg combined. The Edge is a robust family vehicle, but it is not designed with towing in mind.
The Ford Edge made its initial debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in 2006; the first models rolled out of assembly plants at the end of that year. The original Edge featured Ford's signature three-bar chrome grille. Because of its relative newness, the Edge has not been released in many different incarnations as of yet. However, a face-lift in 2011, which premiered at the Chicago Auto Show in early 2010, included a revised bumper and an enhanced front fascia. Currently, the Ford Edge can be equipped with the premium MyFord Touch system that brings it to the forefront of automobile navigation and communication technology.
Roominess is the name of the game with the Ford Edge, whose interior can seat five with ease. Standard features include air conditioning and full power accessories, which are available on the base SE model. Higher trims add dual-zone climate control, rear parking sensors, bigger wheels, ambient lighting, leather upholstery and heated front seats. The power lift-gate is a very popular option, as is the stunning Vista Roof sunroof.
Several key awards have been given to the Ford Edge. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety made it a Top Safety Pick in 2007. That same year, it was named Urban Truck of the Year by On Wheels, Inc. AAA and Parents Magazine jointly named the Edge one of the Best Cars for Families in 2007. This popular crossover SUV is a definite crowd-pleaser.
