The Chevrolet Avalanche combines the best features of a pickup truck and an SUV in one versatile package. The 60/40 split-fold bench seating in back is spacious enough for three, but can be removed or folded down to provide extra cargo space when needed. Surprisingly fuel-efficient for a vehicle of its size, the Avalanche continues to demonstrate flexibility at the pump as it accepts both premium unleaded fuel and E85 ethanol blends. The powerful engine provides improved hauling and towing power for even the toughest jobs.
Available in two-wheel and four-wheel drive models, the Chevy Avalanche features a 5.3 liter V-8 sequential fuel injection engine that provides 320 horsepower and up to 335 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. The vehicle features Chevy's StabiliTrak Electronic Stability Control system for improved handling and rear-wheel drive to provide additional towing and hauling capacity. The integrated traction control system helps the Avalanche grip the road even on slick or sandy terrain. The passenger cabin seats five or six comfortably and all models offer a solid 15 mpg in city driving and 21 mpg on the highway.
The Chevrolet Avalanche was first released during the 2002 model year and was marketed at that time as a pickup truck that could be converted into an SUV. The innovative midgate design allowed the vehicle to be completely reconfigured to serve a variety of home and work applications and to provide added hauling capacity when needed. The second generation redesign was released in 2007 and featured minor cosmetic changes along with an upgraded engine that can run on either unleaded or E85 ethanol fuel. The optional Z71 package offered additional off-road capability for the second generation Avalanche as well.
The interior of the Avalanche is well-appointed with cloth seats standard and optional leather seating in premium trim levels. Like most new Chevrolet vehicles, the Avalanche comes with six months of OnStar service for added safety and convenience. The standard CD and MP3 player with USB port can be upgraded to an eight-speaker Bose surround-sound stereo system for music lovers, while heated front and rear seats are available for colder climates. Optional power-adjusted pedals offer real convenience for shorter drivers; the included memory function allows the pedals to be perfectly positioned for multiple drivers of the same vehicle. Buyers can also opt for keyless remote starting and rearview cameras for added safety.
The Chevy Avalanche was named Motor Trend's SUV of the Year in 2002 and in 2009 was named a Consumer Reports top pick among pickup trucks due to its solid construction and innovative design. The Avalanche was also the AutoPacific VehicleVoice Motorist Choice Award winner for full-size pickup in 2009.
