The Acura NSX is a two-seat sports car manufactured in Japan from 1990 until 2005, and its' been rumored for reintroduction since at least 2009. Honda has been hush-hush, but it would be a smart reinstatement. Known as the smart driver's Ferrari", the mid-engine, rear-wheel drive Acura NSX revolutionized the sports car industry by bringing better fuel economy without sacrificing performance or practicality. It was developed from the HPX or Honda Pininfarina Xperimental, a car commissioned to have Italian influences and rival the finest European sports cars.
The NSX's success is as a result of professional consultation, ingenious engineering, and expert assembly at the dedicated Takanezawa R&D Plant and later at the Suzuka Plant, both in Japan. The car was designed with direct input from racing professional Ayrton Senna and assembled by specially selected Honda employees with at least ten years of production-line experience. Senna's insight can be seen in the car's extraordinary acceleration: the NSX can go from 0 to 60 mph in just over 4 seconds. Furthermore, its lightweight aluminum V-6 engine, suspension components, and chassis, plus a special timing feature, help give the Acura NSX remarkable fuel economy: 22 mpg for highway driving and 15 mpg in the city.
From its debut in 1990, the NSX featured the world's first aluminum chassis and the make's proprietary timing valve to meet rigorous new air emissions standards. In 1992, Honda released the NSX-R, a model that cut extra features but boosted racing performance. The basic NSX was also refit that year with a new suspension system to correct for oversteering. In 1995, Honda introduced the NSX-T, a targa top Acura. The next significant design change came in 1997 when Honda increased the manual model's engine displacement, thereby reducing the car's official 0-60 timing from 5.2 seconds to just 4.3 seconds. A special US-only NSX model is the Alex Zanardi Edition, which was introduced in 1999 to commemorate Honda's racing wins in 1997 and 1998.
The basic NSX and NSX-T feature the most creature comforts of the Acura NSX series. Air conditioning, a CD player, remote keyless entry, and other sports car luxuries were optional. The NSX-R and special edition models are stripped of extras to enhance performance, though the Alex Zanardi Edition NSX stands out for its New Formula Red body and black leather and suede seating.
As early as 1991, Wheels Magazine and Automobile Magazine dubbed the Acura NSX as "Car of the Year" and "Automobile of the Year", respectively. It continues to have widespread appeal, particularly in the sporty New Formula Red and Berlini Black finishes. The car is also available in Gran Prix White, Monaco Blue Pearl, Spa Yellow Pearl, and Silverstone Metallic. Interior options are typically Onyx and Camel.
