Restored 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396

eBay Listing: Squeaky-Clean Restoration of 1970 Chevelle Convertible SS396

The first year of the nineteen-seventies marked a complete restyle of the Chevelle, still based off of the shortened wheelbase of the ’68-’69 model years. The 1970 model year also marked the pinnacle of the first muscle car era. Though the the 396 was technically no longer a 396, as it received a displacement increase to 402 cubic inches by way of a .030” overbore, the “396” call-outs remained on the fenders and the air cleaner of the 1970-1972 Chevelle.

Discovered on eBay is an original California car which has only 73,000 miles on the odometer. This low mileage convertible has just gone through an extensive 17 month restoration and is loaded with almost all the factory options available back in 1970.

Under the factory option hood with sport stripes is a numbers-matching 350hp big block Chevy Turbo-Jet 396 V8 engine sending its power through a TH4000 Turbo Hydra-matic transmission and 12-bolt rear end.

The listing description goes on and says the original California blue license plate, the original 1970 window sticker, and title documents will be included with the sale.

Rich Truesdell, former editor of Chevy Enthusiast magazine and co-author of the book Hurst Equipped, saw this particular Chevelle over the weekend and he had the following to say:

At this past Saturday’s Cars and Coffee car show in Irvine, California, my car caught the eye of Rich Truesdell, co-author of the book Hurst Equipped and the launch editor of Chevy Enthusiast magazine. Here’s what Rich had to say about the car. “High-option cars like this is what I always look for when considering cars for features. This one checks almost all the option boxes, like the rare driver’s-side power seat option and the fiber optic front and rear lamp monitor. If Chevy Enthusiast was still being published, this is a car that I would have put on the cover. While you often see red 454 Chevelles on magazine covers, when did you see such a striking white big-block Chevelle grace the cover of a major publication?”

“While I didn’t have the chance to drive the car, I was able to get some photographs and was very impressed by its overall condition and attention to detail, even areas where you wouldn’t look, such as the undercarriage. As I was taking my photographs I was thinking that this would be a great car to drive up to Pebble Beach next month, taking the PCH instead of US 101. The top would be down, unless it was too hot. Then I’d just raise the roof and turn on the A/C.”

1970 – 1972 model years are among the most popular Chevelles in the series, largely because of their powerful engines but also for their handsome bodywork. This era was the last golden age of muscle cars, and Chevelles were standard-bearers of the day. This past year, more than 200 Chevrolet Chevelles of this generation have been sold on eBay with an average price of $16,000 as reported by the Collector Car Price Tracker.

The seller is asking $75,000 or best offer for this fully restored, numbers matching 1970 Chevelle SS396 and the eBay listing ends on Sunday, August 4, 2013 21:00 PDT. View the eBay listing HERE.
