eBay Listing: 1971 AMC Javelin

Classics  /   /  By Chad Tyson

A Roger Penske-fielded, Mark Donohue- driven AMC Javelin won seven out of 10 races in the 1971 Trans-Am series, taking the overall championship. This 1971 AMC Javelin is “a dedicated recreated vintage Trans Am racer.” The seller says, “No one has ever made one of these in over 40 years to match the level of detail and craftsmanship” of that championship-winning example.

This car was reportedly a rust-free Javelin AMX with a 401 and the Go Pack from Las Vegas, NV. The restorer spent four years building it into the car you see here. The balanced 401-ci V8 pushes out 450 horsepower through a new Richmond/Doug Nash 4+1 transmission.

While comprehensive, the restoration didn’t result in an exact replica. But that’s not really a bad thing. After all, who would want a fire extinguisher from 1971? And the trunk-mounted Optima RedTop is certainly more reliable than its early-’70s counterpart. In addition, the passenger’s seat was put in this car, making it easier to bring a friend along to the vintage races or local cruise-in.

In the past year, eight 1971 Javelins sold on eBay Motors. Good examples averaged $8k and excellent examples averaged nearly $14k. None were built to this level or to recreate the Donohue/Penske car. As a point of comparison, the actual Trans-Am racer this car is based on sold at auction in 2010 for $847,000. Click here to see this how this one is doing.
