Want a classic truck that’ll absolutely positively get you anywhere you need to go? I’ve got one word for you: Unimog.
Originally designed at the close of World War II as a an agricultural instrument, the Unimog offered exceptional four-wheel drive abilities as well as a PTO for operating a variety of implements. They were basically tractors for the road, but with very high ground clearance and a flexible frame andsystems. They featured very low range gearboxes for climbing and plowing through obstacles — just the thing for crawling up past the treeline to find that perfect picnic spot.
Different world militaries have used different versions of the Unimog over the years, including the U.S. Army, which uses them to access remote military installations. But they’re relatively uncommon here in the states, thanks to the general difficulty in importing German trucks, and because of a lack of an American sales and support structure. But the Internet has made parts much more accessible, so if you have your heart set on one of these things, you don’t need to worry too much about worn out fuel pumps or brake shoes. Unless you’re out on the trail when it happens.
This one has a nice canvas top, a fold-down windshield, and a clean wood bed. The seller calls it “the ultimate off-road vehicle” and states that it only has 10,000 miles, which is easy to believe, as it’ll take you a while to go long distances in one of these. It’s also said to be rust-free, and the seller installed a new clutch and new brakes not that long ago. Overall, it looks to be in great driver condition, which is perfect for something you’re actually going to take off-road occasionally.
