Acura’s third-Generation luxury SUV prototype was revealed at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The 7-passenger MDX, competing with other sector notables such as the Infiniti QX and the Audi Q7, now sits upon a lightweight and more rigid chassis.

Boasting a 16% reduction in aerodynamic drag from the last generation MDX, Acura is marketing the design as “Aero Sculpting.” The roofline has been lowered by 1.5” without losing any interior space, and the front end and grille has been retooled for a sleeker look.

The most obvious reworked elements are the Acura Jewel Eye LED headlamps, scooped back from the grille and smartly integrated into the sharper bodyline. Length has been added to the wheelbase for a smoother ride, and new front and rear suspension complement the direct-injected 3.5-liter i-VTEC SOHC V-6 engine with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) for better driving performance and a quieter cabin.

Previous generations of the MDX were exclusively all-wheel drive, but to accommodate customers in warmer regions, the third generation MDX will be offered with front-wheel drive in addition to the all-wheel drive (SH-AWD) model.

The car revealed was only a prototype, and the interior was not available at the press event. However, in-car technologies promised include Forward Collision and Lane Departure Systems, connectivity to the cloud including SMS text messaging, Pandora, and Sirius XM radio. Acura’s help and security system with remote lock/unlock, automated crash notification, and an emergency call capability will be available as an add-on to AcuraLink. Add to that blind spot information, Active Cruise Control, a rear-view camera, Lane Keeping Assist as standard, the 4-door MDX just needs its interior before its projected mid-2013 availability.

With the introduction of the all-new 2014 Acura MDX production will move from Alliston, Ontario, to the company’s vehicle and V-6 engine manufacturing facility in Lincoln, Alabama. Using domestic and globally sourced parts, the MDX is built exclusively in North America.
