eBay Listing: 1963 Pontiac Tempest convertible

Classics  /   /  By Chad Tyson  /  By Chad Tyson

This 1963 Pontiac Tempest convertible is all about inexpensive fun. New bright red paint and an equally clean white top show off GM’s early takes on ‘coke-bottle’ design. The seller says the car is “very original throughout and she runs and drives great.”

The innovative and unusual-looking 195-ci inline four is ostensibly the right bank of the 389-ci V8. The ‘Trophy 4’ proved a double money saver, as it offered higher fuel economy (18 to 22 mpg) for the consumer and used the same engine assembly line as the 389 in Pontiac plants. A Powerglide-based, rear mounted transaxle allowed nearly 50/50 weight distribution and four-wheel independent suspension.

The $54 power top option makes dropping the top as simple as pushing a button, and power steering allows for easy maneuvering in the parking lot while taking everybody out for ice cream.

Close up shots of the black vinyl and new carpet reveals they are clean and presentable. The seller says the chrome and trim “shines like the sun.”

Five 1963 Tempests sold in the past year on eBay Motors. Excellent examples averaged over $12k and good condition ones averaged over $7k. Click here to view this one’s auction listing.
