These doll heads are of 1985 - ELF DESIGNS, INC - The Foster Children soft sculpture dolls were born from the artist/designer's need to create a beautiful doll - using what she considered a fantastic, creative, art medium - soft sculpture. This artist, Esther Lee Foster, was fascinated by the soft sculpture techniques she had seen, but was disappointed to find that most of the doll makers seemed to be striving to create ugly dolls. Early in 1981, Esther Lee’s granddaughter’s fourth birthday was coming up and she decided to make her versions of a pretty soft sculpture doll. Esther Lee said, “My mother and grandmother, very accomplished needle workers, made several different versions of rag dolls for me – and their shape was so much better then the round head version that was so popular, so, I thought I would start with a better shape doll and then enhance it with the soft techniques that we call sculpting, to add still more detail. The stretchy, polyester fabric, the resilient fiberfill of today is so different from the muslin and cotton that my grandmother had to work with.” The shaped Foster Children body was created, and has been refined and improved to the version as shown on the cover, now with jointed arms and a baby doll with jointed arms and legs. Several different versions of the Foster Doll Body are available to go with the Designer Head. You may use the pre-Sewn Doll Body in both the conventional arms and jointed arms, or in kit form, with patterns and directions for those who want to make several of the dolls. There will also be a book, with patterns for the jointed body and a twin’s outfit for boys and girls. These bodies all have the Foster details that users have come to expect, such as the Foster foot, shaped legs and body and detailed, already sewn fingers. The one doll for a grandchild idea has spawned a successful business known as the Elf Designs, Inc., better known as Foster Children Soft Sculpture Dolls. The name Foster Children, of course, is a natural – Esther Lee and Eddie Lee Foster share the same initials, ELF, which gives them the corporate name. The Foster children line of soft sculpture doll books and supplies has grown to more than 100 items – 11 books, more than 15 patterns, kits, doll fabric, Foster Fiberlon hair yarn, plastic doll joints, special needles, the iron-on eyes (which they developed) and mush more. The Foster team of Eddie and Esther Lee believe that to be successful – to get to be number one and stay in that position, you must be innovative and this they have certainly done. New products and ideas abound in this creative pair. They say, “It is so nice to have a business that is so much fun, and brings so much happiness to others, too!” We hope you will enjoy this vinyl Designer Doll Head version of our pretty Foster Children face. |
