THE MAGNIFICENT ROCKIES...(From the dust jacket flaps): Here is the panoramic story of the Rocky Mountain West, from the wild Beartooth country of Montana to the rugged Sangre de Cristos of New Mexico; from the foothills that rise out of the Great Plains on the east to the arid reaches of the Great Basin on the west.  It is a story that started a billion years ago as the earth's surface turned and twisted, heaved and exploded, folded and faulted in a dramatic series of events known as the Laramide Revolution.  Out of such turbulent beginnings emerged the Rockies as we know them today.  On this vast stage, a few eons later, the first simple life forms appeared.  With time they evolved into the familiar plants and animals that abound in the Rockies now; the pine and the aspen, the fragile tundra and the exuberant array of wildflowers; the pika and the chipmunk, the bighorn sheep and the graceful pronghorn antelope.  Each species has adapted to a particular environment---a sheltering slope, desertlike basin, or wind-swept peak.  In THE MAGNIFICENT ROCKIES you will visit all these important natural communities.  But this volume is much more than the natural history of the Rockies.  It is also a comprehensive story of man, from his earliest migration across the Bering Strait, through Fray Escalant's expedition two centuries ago, the coming of the mountain men, the madness of the Pikes Peak gold rush, and the rise of the rancher and the merchant, to the ultimate seeker---today's overurbanized man searching for the refreshment of wilderness in this vast mountain playground.  Enhanced by beautiful color illustrations, this book recounts the entire development of the high country of the West---the triumphs and failures of past and present, and the hopes and fears for the future of this magnficent land, this Crest of a Continent;---------------------------------------------------------------------ITEM LOCATION:  8-Q
