Description: Hard cover book, 1st edition, 1950, 154 pages including Index, many line drawings.

From the Preface: ?The purpose of this monograph is to report and interpret results of an experimental study of disturbances in nasal and respiratory physiology occurring in response to a variety of situational threats. The relevance of these changes to discomfort and disease will be discussed.

Otolaryngologists have long been aware that disturbances in nasal function accompany certain emotional states characterized by anxiety and conflict. The settings and attitudes of the patients have not been defined in detail, however. Neither have they been correlated fully with the alterations in nasal function. Psychiatrists, on the other hand, have also interested themselves in disturbances of the nose. They have correlated nasal dysfunction with problems of personality adjustment and have imputed to the disturbances special symbolic meaning, usually without adequate enquiry into the nature and physiologic mechanisms of the bodily changes. In this book an attempt is made to study the man and his nose at once as a unit, thus integrating these points of view for the better understanding of the human organism.

The first fruit of this approach was the discovery that changes in the nose in response to environmental stimuli rarely occur alone. Rather do they characteristically constitute a part of a broader biologic pattern of reaction which includes as well changes in function of deeper respiratory passages. In addition, other bodily structures in the head and even more distant organ systems are often implicated.

Thereupon experiments were designed to elucidate the mechanisms and biological significance of the patterns of disordered bodily function which involve the nose. It is to be hoped that these data will add some¿½thing to the knowledge and concepts out of which we must fashion our understanding of disease as an attempt of man to adjust to the hostile elements of his environment.?
