This guide explains some of common fitting sizes you may encounter while shopping for airbrush equipment.Airbrush fittings are normally identified by 3 things; size, thread-type and end-type.
The first confusing point is the size isn't really the size. Fittings are named after their "nominal" size, not their actually measured size. Originally, the "nominal" size was supposed to be the inner diameter (ID) of the pipe used to make the fitting. However, if 2 different factories used pipes with different wall thicknesses, then parts from the 2 makers wouldn't fit with each other. So an agreement was reached, where everyone would make the threaded portion (the important part) a standard size, and name the fitting by its "nominal" size. Because of this, the nominal size quoted for a fitting usually won't match the the actaully measured diameter inside or outside the fitting. In fact, to determine the actual size of a fitting when given the quoted (nominal) size, you need to refer to a chart for that thread type. There are some shortcuts; for example, with a BSP thread-type, you can add 1/4" to the nominal size to get the actual size. Therfore, a 1/8" fitting will actully measure 3/8" in diameter across the threaded portion, and a 1/4" fitting will measure 1/2". This shortcut only applies to BSP fittings, which brings us to discuss thread types.
The most popular airbrush thread type found worldwide is the BSP, which is an acronym for "British Standard Pipe" (thread). This thread is used by many of the top brands including PointZero, Iwata, Olympos, Grex, Precision, Harder & Steenbeck and RichPen. Normally the thread type is identified after the size, such as 1/8" BSP (1/8" is the nominal size, and BSP is thread type). This is where things get tricky again. Some thread types have multiple names. If you look at the air inlet on most airbrushes you can see that the fitting looks like a small threaded cylander, it does not taper to a cone-shape. This is called a "parallel" thread, as opposed to a "taper" thread. A parrallel BSP thread is also called a "BSPP" or a "G" thread, which both indicate the same thing; a non-tapering BSP thread. Also, certain thread types are common to a particular industry, so dealers will sometimes leave the thread type un-named, expecting that you will know what thread type is used. So a 1/8" BSP fitting can be called: 1/8" BSP, 1/8" BSPP, 1/8" G, or simply 1/8", leaving you to assume that it's a BSP. In most cases, if the fitting is un-named and it's airbrush specific equipment, the fitting will be BSP. This rule does not apply to common air compressors, or larger spray guns, which may use NPT "National Pipe Thread" fittings. Other thread sizes possibly encountered may be M5x0.45mm used by Badger & Revell, M7x0.75mm used by EFBE, 1/4"-40 used by Paasche, and 3/8"-32g used by Aztec or Devilbiss.
Finally, let's discuss two common end-types (also called genders); male and female. Male fittings have external threads, meaning the threads are visible on the outside of the fitting. Female fittings have internal threads, meaning the threads are located on the inside of the fitting. Male fittings are designed to thread-into, or mate, with female fittings.
Putting it all together
To make a connection and join two fittings together, the size and thread-type must match and the end-type must be opposites. For example, a 1/8" BSP male will hapily mate with a 1/8" BSP female, but a 1/8" and 1/4" fitting will not join, nor will a BSP and NPT fitting, and definatly not a 1/8" BSP and 1/4" NPT. Adaptors are available and can convert sizes, thread-types and end-types to enable these fittings to work together.
