Millettia is a nitrogen and carbon fixing leguminous tree and it is said to be the bio-fuel of the future. It is resistant to a wide range of adverse climatic conditions including drought, light frost, water logging, moisture stress and salinity. It is also tolerant of extremely poor soil types and does not require prime arable land otherwise used for food production. Well suited to intense heat and sunlight, and wind tolerant. Juices from the plant (as well as the oil) are antiseptic and resistant to pests.

The most important asset is that it has the rare property of producing seeds of 40 - 50% lipid oil content. Traditionally used as lamp oil, in soap making and as a lubricant for thousands of years. The seed cake and plantation pruning’s can be utilized as organic fertilizer, high protein animal stock feed, or biomass for heat and power generation.

Over all it is a beautiful flowering deciduous tree that grows to about 15-25 meters in height with a large canopy that spreads equally wide. Flowers, born on racemes are pink/purple or white.

The Genus of this species has been recently changed from Pongamia to Millettia.
