Peru Hand Made and Finish Alpaca Camargo Wool Scarves. This Alpaca wool scarf was made by Peruvian Indian craftswomen to achieve a strong durable product. Size: 69" x 8" inches plus 5" fringe approx.  Brushed finish. Hand crocheted borders. The Indians of this area have produced fine woolens for centuries.  The scarves are durable and compact. Purchasing Peruvian handicrafts provides economic opportunities for hundreds of indigenous people in Peru. By purchasing this scarf, you have directly contributed to the promotion and the preservation of Andean traditions.

ABOUT ALPACA.
Alpaca wool is considered to be some of the softest in the world. The alpaca, a New World relative of the camel, lives in the harshest regions of the South American Andes. It has evolved a coat to protect itself from the climate. The last few decades have seen some significant changes. When I first worked in Peru in the 1980's during the time of the Sendero terrorists the market for Alpaca was restricted. Most Alpaca was locally made into what is still known as Alpaca Rustica. These garments were bulky but very warm and durable. The wool naturally comes in shades ranging from white to brown to grey and black. Early attempts at dying the wool weren't the best. With the elimination of the Senderos the industry grew as Peru's economy recovered. Dyes appropriate for the wool's particular properties produced a wide variety of vibrant colors. The good news for the Indian's raising alpacas was the a world market developed and the price went up dramatically. Fortunately for the consumer blends were developed. Camargo uses acrylic threads to produce the warp. This results in a thinner and more delicate product suitable for the fashion market while retaining the warmth and durability with an alpaca woof. High couture designers such as Salvatorre Ferangamo have produced alpaca garments.

CARING FOR ALPACA. Don't let it's smoothness confuse you. Alpaca is extremely durable and naturally resistant to dirt. The wool is processed gently so as not to disturb the natural oils. Never dry clean an Alpaca garment. Doing so removes the natural oils and shortens the life of the garment. When needed, use green palmolive dishwashing liquid, johnson's baby shampoo or Dr. Bonner's Magic Soap or similar and cold water. HINT: Green Palmolive dishwashing liquid is the old standby for cleaning any delicate wool item. Spread on a towel and let naturally dry.

IF YOU WISH TO SAVE MONEY ON COMBINED SHIPPING YOU SHOULD READ THIS BEFORE PAYING. I’m happy to combine items to save you on shipping. If you’re buying multiples of an item I list the combined shipping charges. If you are buying multiple items, please let me know by sending an invoice request, so I can combine all of your purchases.  Do not pay individual invoices from Ebay & PayPal, I’ll send you one invoice total with all items & combined shipping through Ebay. Foreign buyers need to always contact me before paying for the correct postage. Canadian buyers who fail to do this may find their order delayed or canceled. Ebay software often does not correctly calculate postage to Canada. All other foreign buyers manage to do this. Come on Canadians, please cooperate.

I guarantee all items that I sell. Contact me before purchasing or feedback and I'll work to resolve any questions or doubts about your purchase.

I also carry 100% Alpaca apparel in the Rustic style. In addition I have a selection of wool winter hats and scarves from Ecuador and Nepal as well as stylish none handicraft hats and scarves.

If you are interested in large purchases or special orders please be aware that some items are in stock in the US and available for rapid delivery. However, a much larger variety is kept in Peru and deliveries from there can take up to a month.
