This is Kiss My Math by Danica McKellar, a book to help middle school children understand pre-algebra, written in a fun low-stress style geared towards girls (boys will find the book to be "pink", although the clear math explanations would be useful to them) publisher's description below.  Math topics include negative numbers, mean, median and mode, variables, math functions with variables (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing), combining like terms, the distributive property, using variables to translate word problems, solving equations, word problems and variable subsitution, introduction to solving and graphing inequalities, introduction to exponents and variables with exponents, introduction to functions, introduction to graphing points and lines, math test survival guide.  There are some problems throughout the book for kids to solve, with answers at back and detailed explanations available at an internet site.
