DESCRIPTION :

This auction is for a great old and original wonderful watercolor drawing by Jacob Adolphus Holzer. It was done in 1890. This superbly done and colored water color shows men in a Greek or Roman workshop making coins and has a title of “Coining with Two Single Dies VIIth Century B.C.” This medium sized water color with the domed top is what I believe to be a preparatory or study drawing for a Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company mosaic for one of the United States coin mints. Jacob was a Swiss born designer, muralist and was Tiffanys chief designer. If you look closely at this wonderful water color you can see how it would make a great mosaic with the detailing. This ORIGINAL watercolor is in its original frame and matting. The dome shape was probably to go over a door way or opening. This visible parts of this watercolor are about 14 X 7 ½ inches. The frame is oak with an applied border decoration. The frame is about 21 X 13 ½ inches. I have never taken it out of the frame. It might have more clues on the borders of the watercolor. This superb artwork came from an estate out East that had many rare and odd Tiffany items. I can only imagine that it must have been a relative of Holzers estate or an early Tiffany collector. This water color is in great condition with bright colors and some minor toning from age. I would imagine the new owner might want to have it re matted with acid free mats and backing. Don’t miss out on your opportunity to own a piece of history no matter whether you collect Holzer, Tiffany or possibly even a coin collector. This is definitely museum worthy and historical.
