Each of these origami cranes was made of one uncut piece of square Washi paper and they were carefully lacquered to help them become water resistant.

Washi means Japanese paper. Washi is a type of paper made by hand in Japan. Washi is commonly made using fibers from the bark of the gampi tree, mitsumata shrub, or mulberry, but it also can be made by using bamboo, hemp, rice, or wheat.
