. Vintage original 27 x 41” (68 x 102 cm.) one sheet poster, USA. Robert Young, Robert Mitchum, Robert Ryan, Gloria Grahame, dir: Edward Dmytryk, RKO. “Hate is like a loaded gun…” was a very strong come-on line for this great film noir classic. The story focused on a murder investigation revolving around anti-Semitics and involved demobilized military personnel just home from World War II. All very timely subjects in 1947. The best picture for that year, GENTLEMAN’S AGREEMENT, had similar themes. The original novel’s theme (by Richard Brooks), however, was homophobia – changed for the production code period to anti-Semitism. Director Edward Dmytrick and Producer Adrian Scott would soon be blacklisted by the House Un-American Activities Committee. Dymtryk may have lost the Academy Award because of his refusal to testify (he, along with Robert Ryan, Gloria Graham, writer John Paxton and the film itself received nominations). Art of the main stars holding cigarettes and guns against a moody dark background give this poster a definite noir-feel. On linen, VERY FINE.
