The 403A machine listed in this auction is in super nice condition with no measurable wear and tear! A perfect vintage specimen that although it has a couple of minimal scratches at the center of the bed, it looks and performs as close as possible to a new machine! And, the paint is still as shiny and beautiful as it was when it was manufactured over half a century ago! We have cleaned and tested every part inside and out, and verified that it meets all the manufacturer's specifications. The timing and tolerances have been checked and are all in perfect set. This machine is very clean, serviced and lightly oiled with authentic Singer machine lubricant. It is ready for all sewing tasks. This machine sews a perfect stitch, straight, zigzag, or pattern (with the internal set of built-in metal cams, or with the included pattern discs) and it really has industrial strength. It breezed with ease through all the samples. This machine is ready to work, and work hard, through straight, zigzag,and pattern stitches, on multiple layers of a variety of materials, from soft fabrics to denim and leather. Drop-In Bobbin The bobbin is a top-loading, drop-in type. This makes it easy to insert the bobbin, or to change the bobbin between projects. The bobbin case and the rotating hook on this machine are in excellent condition, and the edge of the hook (left side of the bobbin area) is as sharp as that of a new machine. Needle Thread Tensioner The Singer 403A uses one of the best thread tension systems. It employs a spring-loaded dial which is calibrated from 1 through 10. We have thoroughly examined and cleaned the tension system. All tension discs are shiny and smooth and the springs are strong. Beautiful Specimen of a Singer 403A This vintage Singer 403A is a beautiful sewing machine. It is designed with two-tone colors of tan and ivory, and it looks today just as beautiful as it did when it was manufactured more than half a century ago! A simple way to evaluate the condition of a vintage sewing machine is done by examining the hand wheel, the bed corners, and the rubber feet under the bed. The hand wheel has no visible scratches and is very shiny, and even the silver inner knob is still beautiful with just minimal imperfections. This machine is equipped with brand new rubber feet! This Singer 403A can sew many types of materials: soft leather, western leather, suede, patches, heavy canvas, army equipment, sporting and camping canvas, sunbrella, sailcloth, tarps, furniture upholstery materials, nylon straps, tarps, auto and airplane. However, when sewing very slippery materials, especially multiple layers of shiny slippery fabrics, the Walking Foot becomes useful. The center layers of slippery multi-layer sewing jobs (those layers that do not come in contact with the feed dogs or the presser foot), can easily shift and move within the "sandwich" of materials. For those sewing jobs, the Walking Foot is used, to keep all layer intact and moving them evenly! The Walking Foot "walks" on top, in sync with the feed dogs at the bottom!
