Background on Sunless Tanners… O2 Cosmetics Tanning Mist, and most sunless tanners are DHA (Dihydroxyacetone) based. DHA based sunless tanners work by interacting with the dead surface cells in the outermost layer of the skin to darken the skin color. The tan fades as the dead surface cells are shed and exfoliated. Any rubbing on the skin by clothes or aggressive washing, will shorten the length of the tan. This will occur with any DHA based self tanner on the market since they all react with the surface cells of the skin. Resulting color and how long the tan lasts is purely dependent on the individuals skin type just like a real tan.  The tan lasts, depending on activity, about 5-7 days just like a real tan. Most self tanners, like O2 Cosmetics Tanning Mist, have a "bronzer" additive added to the formula so you can see where the Tanning Mist is being applied. As well this provides you with an instant tan. You see this immediately and it will wash off immediately. The tanning process caused by the DHA reaction with the skin takes about 6 hours. The process is that you apply the Tanning Mist, as you apply the product you will instantly see the color from the "bronzer", wait about 6 hours, wash the bronzer off, and then you are left with the resulting tan from the DHA reaction with the skin.
