Asbestos References: This textbook documents asbestos insulation was used extensively on U.S. Navy vessels & other ships during World War II. It also includes standard practice for naval equipment such as diesel engines, etc. It’s another must have book for an asbestos litigators’ library specialized in asbestos exposure of U.S. Navy Seamen! Table of Contents: In the chapter for insulation asbestos is mentioned many times. Boilers, boiler casings, air-cooled boiler furnace walls, boiler tube doors, breechings & ducts, turbines (or reciprocating engines), deck piping, pipe flanges, valves & fittings, hot water heaters, storage tanks, hot air heaters, ducts, flues and fan housings, auxiliary steam lines, exhaust and feed & heating piping all had some form of asbestos recommended for its insulation. Asbestos insulating materials mentioned include amosite asbestos, asbestos cloth, asbestos felt, asbestos cement, molded sectional asbestos pipe covering, 85% magnesia, asbestos millboard, transite and Super-Amosite to name a few. Asbestos cement is shown as a filler between flanged joints. There are step-by-step instructions given for the application of asbestos for several different applications: Heavy asbestos gaskets are were used in oil purifiers. Asbestos graphite packing was used in cooling systems pump stuffing boxes. Several diesel engines are diagrammed and detailed in the book with such names as: Atlas, Cooper-Bessemer, Cummings, Fairbanks Morse, Hamilton, Ingersoll-Rand, National Supply, Nordberg, Sun-Doxford and Enterprise. A bit of background is given on each company.
