Album Notes
DICK'S PICKS VOLUME TWENTY-SIX is currently available through mail-order by contacting Grateful Dead Merchandising at 1-800-CAL-DEAD or online at www.dead.net.DICK'S PICKS VOLUME TWENTY-SIX is the twenty-sixth in a series of archival live Dead CDs that were overseen by the late Dick Latvala. It differs from the band's "From The Vault" series in that the "Dick's Picks" releases do not feature entire concerts and are mastered from two- and four-track recordings, rather than eight- and sixteen-track recordings. Latvala was the official keeper of the Dead's tape archives. The Grateful Dead organization characterizes him as "one of the original Dead tapers".Grateful Dead: Jerry Garcia (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Bob Weir (vocals, guitar); Ron "Pigpen" McKernan (vocals, harmonica, percussion); Phil Lesh (vocals, bass); Tom Constanten (keyboards); Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann (drums).Recorded live at Electric Theater, Chicago, Illinois and Labor Temple, Minneapolis, Minnesota on April 26 & 27, 1969.Recording information: 04/26/1969-04/27/1969.This two-disc set drawn from two Midwestern Grateful Dead shows in April 1969 is a unique snapshot of what made the band special. The first couple of tunes, "Dupree's Diamond Blues" and "Mountains of the Moon," find Garcia mixing in acoustic guitar with the full-band arrangements. After that, things get fired up in full-bore electric format. It's fascinating to listen to this early version of the group navigate its way through the dynamic shifts and tempo/meter changes of such acid epics as "Cryptical Envelopment" and the aforementioned "Mountains of the Moon," but the rootsier side of their sound was already emerging, as seen by a cover of the future concert staple "Me and My Uncle," a country rocker written by Papa John Phillips, and a little-heard Jimmy Reed blues number, "I Know It's a Sin." As if all this weren't enough, we get a second disc featuring the full improvisational fire of "Dark Star" and "St. Stephen."

Editorial Reviews
...1969 was a vintage year for the group, as these recording confirm....[Constanten's] energetic and ecstatic organ grinding provides the perfect launching pad for Garcia's quicksilver stringed missile...
