Features: This is a very nice older vintage (1932 to 1934 c ) super heavy adjustable Squash Blossom necklace for woman or man. ALL metals are ALL made of sterling silver with 3 green onyx stones (dome pear cut and 2 dome round cut) of very good quality. Stones are of earlier Southwestern mines and hard to find. Stones total approx 3 cts (larger stone at approx 2 cts and other stones at approx 1/2 ct per each). It's highly collectible and considered rare as well as of rare 'old pawn.  Navajo Native American Indian custom made.  An earlier design by Jack Micherlson (and his wife Mildred) , of the Navajo tribe , founded and operated the Navajo tribe shop: Bell Trading Post Co., Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA . They opened thier Navajo shop in 1932 (but like much of the earlier tribal navajo, they likely designed before opening shop). Has very impressive smith workmanship. Very well made , strung on solid strong mesh link chain (as oppose to later liquid types). Naja, (center piece) has beautiful detail, done in earlier hand tool needle work . Was made for adjustable fitting with it's link chain which is original to it.  NOTHING has been altered from this fabulous necklace. ALL links are original as all loupes were hand soldered (fully closed) from end to end with Naja loupe, fully closed as well.  Necklace is very super heavy. Weighs: 109.5 grams .  It was well kept and in excellent condition. Auction starting price is very reasonbly low, especially from this earlier Navajo maker as  these earlier original Squash Blossom necklaces are indeed , worth thousands of dollars in the collectors market.

Measurements: It's adjustable. It's entire lenght is 23 1/3 inches long. You can adjust from a 19 2/3 inch lenght up to 23 1/3 inch lenght.  idea lenght of 19 inches long. Naja portion (center peice) is 2 1/8 inches wide and a little over 2 inches tall.  Each bead is  1/3 inch wide (9.5 mm in diameter) . Spacers: 1 1/2 inches tall by up to a little over 1/3 inch wide. Link chain is 3.7 mm in width.

Hallmark and Trademark: " STERLING" with Bell's earlier trademark as shown in 5th photo.

Authenciation : Authencity can be dirrectly confirmed at following refference site at:   http://www.art-amerindien.com/signature_picto-hallmarks.htm  Also, at this link, scroll down to Navajo section: Navajo Symbol where shop is listed as Navajo ,  displayed at the 1st of 2nd row. Also, at same refference site, at:  http://www.art-amerindien.com/signature_bijoux_amerindiens.htm#b Has shop's earlier mark. On page 57 of research aurthor Bille Hougart's "Little Book of Marks on Southwestern Silver", confirm's shop was established in 1932 with Bell symbol listed as earlist mark.

Old Navajo Pawn Defined: Old pawn was not jewelry made for pawning (NONE pawn shop related) but had more to do with protecting assets in silver and stones.  Only  times of financial emergencies, silver and stones were actually traded for money as opposed to taken to some pawn shop. Of course, these trades gaved them even higher value (without removing the stones) , based on workmanship and of course, silver value. Historically what often occured when  a Navajo member who passes away, would will it to another family member as part of family assets and seldom was it was used for trade but only in emergency. The term "old Pawn" is had nothing to do with a Native American going to some pawn shop in need of money. When this term is used that way, it is miss used and rather insulting. Actually, many were very generous, especally toward those whom respected them. On the contrary, a navajo member would give it to some one as a generous gift which was considered a highly honored gift indeed.

For lovers of the really old and well made, the value and emotional attraction for old pawn Indian jewelry is that it's been owned, appreciated, worn, and favored most among native tribal members as oppose to some sort of tourist trap piece. As one native American Indian and collector said: "Old pawn jewelry is a relic of a people and a culture which is slowly and inevitably disappearing into history". The more that is learned of Indian silversmiths and old pawn jewelry the more we'll learn how the old silversmiths produced a higher standard of their art for Indians than they did for traders and non-Indians".

Examples of  earlier types are found at a highly reputable Navajo Native American owned vending sites  at: http://www.navajopawn.com/images/images/SquashBlossomNecklace.html

Would make a nice gift. Or, own it yourself and invest in this impressive necklace and appreciate the compliments you'll get as its antiquity value and silver/precious value continues to increase even more so over time.
