You are bidding on a huge sample of Silica Aerogel in a collector case as shown in the first 4 pictures (the others are stock pics from the web). It won't be the exact piece pictured, but nearly a twin. It is approximately 2.5x1.25x0.45” (64x32x11mm). A piece this size is very rare and generally costs much more. The larger the piece, the more amazing it looks! Pictures just don't do this material justice; you have to hold it in your hand to get the true experience. Please ask about discounts for multiple quantity orders.
This is a great collectors' item, gift, a unique and rare science display, or just something to amaze your friends. It’s simply amazing to hold in your hands! Silica Aerogel was developed by NASA, and used to insulate the Mars Rover and collect comet dust in the Stardust Mission. Some interesting facts about Silica Aerogel:
- World's lightest solid consisting of up to 99.8% air...the rest is Silica
- World's best insulator...those crayons are only protected by a 1/2 inch thick tile (down to 4mW/m for the geeks like me)
- Can support over 1000X its weight...yes, that's a 2gm piece under the 2.5kg brick
- Melting point is over 2000°F (1000°C)
- Nicknamed "Blue Smoke" due to its appearance...its hard to believe you are holding a solid (transparent if light is direct)
