Auction is for one Civil War Nurse style Day or Camp Dress
This outfit would be great for stage, SASS or beginner CW or rendezvous reenactor.
It accurately reflects specific historical design elements used in women's clothing during the time of the Civil War - an excellent dress for first stage of mourning or nurse impression.
This costume is from the 'used' rack in my sutlery. COSTUME IS "USED" AND SELLS "AS IS"
VERY HIGH WAISTED
This is a very well constructed (I don't know who the seamstress was) dress made of black fabric - content unknown. Feels like linen or rayon-like linen, might even be wool or linseywoolsey. The texture is visible in the pictures. Sleeves are one shade darker than the rest of the dress - they might have been replaced. Bodice is lined - very nice period correct sewing techniques. Gown features vertical darts, two on each side as is correct construction from that time period. Back has curved seams and pleat at center back. No piping. Skirt is cartridge pleated to the bodice. Closes in center front with hooks & handmade thread 'eyes'. Sleeves are coat sleeves. Hem is bottom of fabric turned under a couple inches and hand stitched. The very bottom of the skirt has a gray colored cotton twill tape hem guard. The raw edges in the sleeves have been covered with white bias tape which has been hidden in the seams for the most part. The white is not visible at all from the outside of the sleeve. The neck has two tucks in it - one on each side of the placket - about 2" from the center. In the last picture I slid a piece of paper under the tuck before I finished tacking the collar down.
Bust is about 50" actual measurement not bra size. (Mannequin measures 46" and the dress is a little too big for her.)
Waist is 38 -39" Those are measured on the INSIDE of the garment, not outside.
Sweep is 164". yes, 41" x 4!
Front measures 13" long from neck down the line of buttons to the TOP of the waistband.
Side seam from pit to top of waistband is only 6".
On back from neck to top of waistband is only 14".
The bottom of waistband to hem is about 40" long. I didn't find any rips, or stains or excessive distress - but it's black and I could have missed something. I'll look again tomorrow in the daylight and I'll revise the listing if I see any flaws or damage.
I am including a new collar and new cameo. The collar is tacked on by hand so you can remove or replace or clean it easily. It is a new creamy colored cotton collar from Wrights - it is new oldstock.
The cameo is new - something we hope to provide with each of our ladies dresses in the future. This one has gunmetal colored setting with a pin on the back. The cameo is cream on black background. The cameo measures about 25mmx18mm not including the setting.
Fine print

My business, Buttons and Blooms, sews and sows. I made my first costume, Betsy Ross, in 1976. I love to plan and plant flowering perennial gardens and sew on my vintage Singer sewing machines. Go to www.buttonsandblooms.com to see pictures of my Dutch costume designs and historically inspired costumes. One year of study, designing and stitching paved the way for our first colonial gown to win first prize in a national Town Crier competition. With that confidence I throw my hat into the reenactment and rendezvous costume arena. This year I was seamstress and sutler at many local Michigan Civil War reenactments including Charleton Park in Hastings, Hilts Landing, VanRaalte Farm in Holland, and Cascade Falls in Jackson.
