Newspapering in the Old West: A Pictorial History of Journalism and Printing on the Frontier
by Robert F. Karolevitz
Hardcover, dust jacket in protective mylar cover, 8 1/2" x 10 3/4", 192 pages, in mint condition.
Illustrated with 350 rare photographs, illustrations, advertisements, and newspaper pages.

From the dust jacket:

Close on the trail of the covered wagon and river boat came the tents, frame shacks, and adobe huts, to be occupied by the men with the little hand presses and big day dreams.

'Praise God all ye good people and let the prairies resound to the measured strokes of our job press" wrote the youthful editor of the "Guthrie Get Up."

There was the complete printing outfit that crossed the mountains strapped to the backs of 45 mules. There was the case of the ink rollers eaten by the hungry Indians who thought they were candy. The press that was built of wood, which its owner reckoned could 'tell the truth as well as an iron one.'

But for all their problems, the W's that had be be made with double V's, the crude presses, lack of money, it was in the final analysis, men not equipment, which made newspapering the warm, personal, exciting thing that it was.

There was the "Oregon style" of free-swinging journalism. Example: "There is not a brothel in the land that would not have felt itself disgraced by the presence of the (rival paper) of week before last. It was a complete tissue of gross profanity, obscenity, falsehoods and meanness, and yet it was little below the standard of that characterless sheet," wrote one editor about another's paper. Then there was the "Wyoming style" quixotic and titillating. Perhaps Bill Barlow typified this style when he wrote "Live, laugh and love - there'll come a time when you can't."

In this general style was George R. Caldwell "the Lurid Liar of Landar" and his paper the Platte Valley Lyre, also "Lying Jim Townsend" of the Reno Gazette who concocted news as he needed it with his own fertile imagination.

Sometimes it is true the editorial feuds were climaxed with six guns. Col. R. D. Anthony, a vitriolic editor of several early day newspapers, was at one time or another horsewhipped, beaten with an umbrella, punched in the nose and wounded by gun fire.

Yet, with all, who can say the frontier editor didn't have fun? In this volume, with vintage photographs and breezy perceptive writing, author Karolevitz offers the story of the editors and printers in 17 states who wielded quills, type sticks and six guns with equal deftness.

History? They made it, wrote it and printed it!
