Complete duct distribution system
Complete energy efficient duct system designed and pre-cut specifically for your application. Using the ultimate duct system materials, Fiberglass Duct Board by Owens-Corning and pre-cut by DESCO Energy. Fiberglass duct board is more easily installed and adapted to every installation avoiding traditional sheet metal. It is also energy saving reducing heat transfer and air leakage losses. Sheet metal duct systems leak on average 25 cents of every energy dollar and are difficult and bulky to install. Sheet metal is not only unforgiving but also has hazardous razor sharp edges. In addition to sheet metal's air leakage problems, there is also the high transfer of energy lost through thin metal walls. If you were to attempt to use the equivalent in sheet metal ducting the cost of sheet metal plus the cost of fiberglass duct liner considered plus the intense labor required to make the ducting and to install it is four times the cost of Fiberglass Duct Board. And even using this method, sheet metal still has high air leakage problems. There is nothing more efficient, cost effective and easier to install than pre-cut Fiberglass Duct Board. Fiberglass duct board is not the traditional fiberglass round ducting. Typical round flex fiberglass ducting is not the best product to be using in abundance due to it's ability to compress easily when making turns or elbows which severely restricts air flow. In addition round fiberglass flexible ducting should never be run more than six feet. Flex duct needs to be properly supported with sheet metal banding. Flex ducting should never be made into elbows or bends. Instead a metal elbow should be used and the flex duct insulation should be pulled over the elbow to prevent energy loss and condensation. Fiberglass duct board can be purchased in various pre-cut sizes and with various insulating capabilities. Energy efficiency is not only due to the natural high insulation values but equally important is the low leakage factor of 4% which is second to none. Please see our other ads for a complete pre-cut fiberglass duct system for your project. Specialized tools are required for fiberglass duct systems which we rent at very low nominal fee.

Furnace Feet
Labor Saver Return Air Filter Plenum
High Media Filter (We strongly recommend the use of a high media filter on every Heat Pump. High media filters allow you to keep your house clean from pollen, smoke and other pollutants while keeping your duct system free from heavy dirt build up which shows up as black marks on walls at air registers. Dirt in ducting is also a perfect breeding ground for dust mites, mold and all types of other critters.
Humidifier - No other single product does so much to save energy and increase comfort as well as providing so many numerous other benefits as a humidifier. You can reduce the thermostat setting by 5 degrees and have the same feeling of comfort. Heat Pumps discharge cooler air than furnaces and humidifiers reduce this chill effect significantly.
Optional Heat Pack from 5 to 10kw available but not included.

Hard Start Kit - We recommend a hard start kit for all heat pumps and air conditioning units. An inexpensive control that protects your compressor against low voltage, brown-outs, rapid recycling and more.

Important Information and Guidelines to a Successful HVAC Installation
Before you make any decision about purchasing any heating or air conditioning system online there are important facts you should know. This information will make the difference in whether your installation is successful allowing you to achieve optimum energy savings, comfort and longevity at the lowest cost.
More than 70% of existing residential heating and cooling systems are oversized and improperly installed. (Facts stated are derived from Dept. of Energy and Penn State Home Survey Studies) These cut backs are responsible for over 98% of warranty claims and premature system failures. Oversized equipment is a result of guesswork and rules of thumb from over 25 years ago. Undersized ducting is a result of the installer using whatever space is available and scrimping on materials. The installer chosen by the building contractor was the absolute lowest price. Unknown to the public is the unbelievably low prices and extremely low profit HVAC (HVAC-Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning) installers make on new construction. Since the HVAC system is not any priority other than necessity for the builder, no attention is given to the proper layout or performance. The only concern of a prospective homeowner might be the name of the manufacturer. So we get what we pay for. Yet intense attention is made to kitchen cabinets, flooring etc. while the system that will consume the bulk of every household budget goes completely unnoticed. This is why even multi-million dollar homes are many times left with the poorest comfort conditions and excessive energy consumption. It takes a complete system properly designed and installed to achieve the rated energy efficiency of the equipment. Even with the most efficient furnace, heat pump or boiler, one weak link in the system and the energy consumption goes through the roof and comfort levels are unbearable. Optimal comfort and energy efficiency aren't exclusive to each other, they both go hand in hand.
Today's Economy
Just when we think the economy and cost of energy can't get worse, it does. When oil prices rise so does the cost of gasoline and every other energy source including electric, natural gas, propane plus food etc. Obviously none of us can really afford to continue down the same path of more consumption. Some will buy new cars on the justification of reducing gas consumption. But the energy required to build that new car versus the amount of fuel saved doesn't justify the cost unless you're driving 1,000s of miles a month. Some advocate wind energy except most wind areas are remote to the heavy demand areas of electrical consumption. The government has supported ethanol production except the cost to produce it versus the energy derived isn't cost effective. Ethanol production has increased the cost of all food supplies and is 70-80% less efficient than gas. Solar energy in the northeast and mid Atlantic regions is not yet proven to be cost effective until we can build more efficient batteries and cost effective solar panels with sustained longevity. While we do have an abundant supply of coal and natural gas the controversy of fracking and global warming conflict with its usage. Since the nuclear crises in Japan further support of using nuclear is at another serious controversy. Plus when government subsidation of the processing, disposal and construction of nuclear plants are added into that equation it becomes questionable about the feasibility of using nuclear power.
The bottom line is we are quickly running out of adequate cost effective sources of energy now yet alone the future. Even new oil discoveries reveal it takes more energy and cost to capture this oil than the energy it provides. And the regions where we presently import oil from now are in such turmoil we could easily find ourselves paying $5-$7 a gallon for gasoline overnight. As other global economies grow and their demand for energy increases we feel the effects of those price hikes immediately.
Unfortunately our brightest minds are being utilized on creating more scams in the financial markets or creating more useless electronic gadgets than being applied to the biggest threats to our economy and survival. While our infrastructure continues to deteriorate, our energy and electrical producing capacities and distribution are also deteriorating as our energy needs continue to increase.
Many in the public believe there are many brilliant minds out there working diligently who will soon resolve our energy problems. Personally I 'd like to believe that was true but I don't see much evidence of that happening. It certainly sent the wrong message to severely reduce the energy tax credits this year. But before you make a final decision to buy your new system utilities and certain states are offering increased rebates this year.
Most importantly it is significant to realize all energy costs are going to continue to skyrocket. The most viable means available to keep your energy costs down is by using less. The most common method is to lower thermostat settings in winter and raise them in summer which means losing comfort levels. However replacing old worn out inefficient heating and cooling systems will reduce energy consumption 35-50% while increasing comfort levels.
Making Energy Conservation Work for You!
Realize saving energy on your heating and cooling system and achieving increased comfort and maximum longevity requires the following:
(1.) Properly size the replacement system. Most existing systems are oversized. Purchasing an oversized system costs more initially, wastes more energy and decreases comfort and longevity.
(2.) Purchase the most efficient system your budget allows even if its a rental property. The difference in cost between an 80% furnace or a 95% furnace will pay for itself in the first winter. Plus there are energy tax credits available as well as utility rebates which will make the cost difference negligible in many areas of the country. The same is true in air conditioning and heat pump systems.
(3.) If you're replacing your furnace and air conditioning consider a dual fuel system. A dual fuel system has the best return on your investment even over a geothermal system. A dual fuel system uses a heat pump with a gas furnace.
(4.) Most contractors and online sellers will try to sell you the largest size system you'll accept. However when your existing system is already oversized and you've made other energy saving improvements to your house, an oversized system won't match up with the existing duct or air distribution system. The duct system and amount of air registers has to be sufficient for the size of the equipment and the required amount of heating and cooling. Undersized ducting results in uneven comfort levels, premature failure of equipment, excessive energy usage, excessive noise from air, temperature swings cold and hot spots.
(5.) Use the most cost effective system and fuel for your area. In general the most cost effective fuels are by order 1. Heat Pump with dual fuel using natural gas. 2. Natural Gas 3. Electric Heat 4. Propane 5. Oil Please note that energy prices on these fuels can vary significantly across the country. There are certain pockets of the country where propane is significantly lower in price while most of the country it is more expensive than electric. In States like California electric rates are the highest in the nation. But oil prices are the most expensive in all the lower 48 and Canada while they are somewhat lower in areas like Texas and Oklahoma.
(6.) Heat Pumps alone are excellent for areas like Florida, Georgia Alabama and the Carolinas. While they are more cost effective than oil in the northern regions remember when the outside temperature drops below 30 degrees the heat output of the heat pump drops off accordingly and the system is then primarily using only electric resistance to heat.
(7.) If you want the optimum in comfort and energy savings for heating only consider indoor radiant floor heating or hot water baseboard heating.
(8.) For the systems that utilize the least amount of energy consumption and cost effectiveness for heating and cooling use a geothermal system or the Fujitsu minisplit multiple heat pumps systems with variable speed compressors. While these systems use the least amount of energy and they are the least expensive to operate, they also come with the 30% tax credits and no cap. However even with the tax rebates and utility rebates, they are the most expensive systems to purchase and install. The payback period in most cases continues to exceed the life expectancy of the equipment.
(9.) After this present winter which has been the coldest in decades measured in heating degree days across the country, this has also become the most costly for the vast majority of homeowners and businesses. While its possible to survive without air conditioning in many parts of the country, heating systems are a necessity for almost all areas. In most parts of the country people can't survive without heating. Your heating system operates far more time in most parts than cooling systems.
(10.) At the same time the most expensive item in every household budget is the energy costs to heat and cool. Yet it is the heating and cooling systems that are neglected the most. Furnaces, air handlers, outdoor cooling units are always tucked away in the most inconspicuous locations in every home - out of sight and out of mind. Unlike your car we are see how gas prices keep climbing almost daily. When our cars aren't working efficiently we also tend to notice that immediately. And we know we have to keep the engines tuned up, change spark plugs, check emissions and change the air filters and oil regularly. When we neglect them we also know the maintenance repairs and greater fuel consumption hits our wallets quickly and hard. Many people trade in their cars after 10 years for something more reliable and efficient. But over 70% of typical homeowners ignore their heating and/or cooling systems until they stop working. Only 30% of homeowners change the air filters more than once a year. Many never change them at all until the system stops working altogether. Most use the cheapest fiberglass air filters they can find which allow 50% or more of the dirt to bypass them. The dirt collects on the heat exchangers, clogs the air system, reduces heat or cooling transfer, decreases efficiency, wastes a lot more energy and then the duct system also loads up with dirt further reducing air flow and dust mites, mold and other creatures while making dirt deposits at every air register. For allergy sufferers and those with respiratory ailments this creates a very polluted indoor environment causing them further duress and complications. Too often homeowners will install new equipment that failed prematurely due to improper maintenance and then neglecting maintenance on he new equipment. It's not uncommon for a new system that is high efficiency to find in 5-10 years the system efficiency has dropped in half and fail prematurely. Failures related to this neglect are not covered under any manufacturer's warranty. Equally importantly is the fact of all the wasted energy that results. Over 80% of equipment failures, service calls and repairs that occur in the first 10-12 years are a result of neglect, improper maintenance, undersized ducting, oversized equipment or poor installations.
(11.) They don't build them like they used to. One of the few areas in USA built quality comes shining through in heating and cooling equipment for residential and light commercial equipment. Over 98% of this equipment is still built in the USA and after 35 years in business DESCO is seriously impressed with the quality, efficiency, reliability, longevity and performance of the equipment built today. Not only is it built better than ever before, the warranties are far superior than ever before. Pricing in accordance with inflation is also the lowest ever. For example a 70k btu gas furnace with 2 stages of heat and 95% efficiency sold for $400 to $1,000 more 10 years ago than today. That furnace of 10 years ago only had a 1 or 5 year warranty on certain parts and the heat exchanger had a 10-20 year warranty that was prorated. Today's furnace is more compact and quieter with more technology that has a 10 year warranty on all parts and a lifetime warranty on the heat exchanger. In addition if the heat exchanger would fail in the first 10 years the manufacturer will replace the entire furnace, not just the heat exchanger.
(12.) The same is true of air conditioning and heat pumps. In the 1970s and 1980s heat pumps had an average lifespan of 7-10 years. Air conditioning systems lasted 10-14 years. The warranties up until the past 10 years were typically 1 year on parts and 5 years on the compressor. They weren't very efficient and quite noisy. Today's air conditioning and heat pump systems have 10 year parts warranties, up to lifetime compressor warranties, 3 times or more efficient, extremely quiet with more reliable technology. Plus in inflationary terms the typical system costs 60% less.
So if you're serious about saving energy, increasing comfort and making an investment in your home that's going to continually save you money every day, increase the value of your home and costs less than ever while energy costs are higher than ever, now is the best time to make that investment. Where else could anyone make an investment that's going to continuously save money daily, pay for itself in a few years, increase the value of your home and costs less than ever before plus a possible tax credit and/or utility rebate?
At DESCO Energy we've always provided factory trained NATE certified technical support. Few outsiders to our industry understand what that means. It is the highest level of achievement recognized throughout the entire HVAC industry. In addition to the NATE certification each technical support team member has been factory trained and has complete knowledge and experience in the installation service and repair of every type of equipment and system we provide. You can't obtain this high level of certified support anywhere else online. Less than 5% of those in our industry are NATE certified.
As a do it yourself homeowner you can save an average of 70% off of a contractor quoted installation by doing most of the work yourself. As a homeowner with little do it yourself skills you can also save an average of 30% off a contractor quoted installation by hiring a competent licensed installer of your choice rather than using a contractor to do your installation. Both methods result in an average 50% reduction in energy consumption. Bottom line there are thousands of dollars that can be saved by making your heating and air conditioning system a do it yourself project.
Regardless of the method you choose you will need a licensed professional installer to complete your project. Refrigerant lines and final wiring hook ups and check out of the system must be performed by a licensed professional installer of your choice. If you are intending to make your project a 100% DIY project without the use of a licensed professional installer you will void the manufacturers warranty and may be in violation of federal, state and local laws and possibly jeopardize your homeowner's insurance coverage should any future problems result from or be traced back to the HVAC installation. Remember we don't require a licensed contractor to do the finalization of your system, just the experienced licensed installer that works for the contractor saving you a lot of $$$$
The above facts apply regardless of where you purchase your system and the manufacturer you use.
DESCO Energy has one primary goal.
DESCO Energy has never tried to sell to any homeowner on the basis of simply being the lowest price. Yet when you look at all of the work we put into providing you with valuable information, certified factory trained NATE certified technical support, guidelines, online sizing form and a reputation and track record as well as sales volume second to none, we are the best value for your money in every category. We could be like other sellers and forget about these valuable and costly support services but we have the experience and certifications to know there's a lot more required than just offering boxes of cardboard in our ads to make your success. Our goal is to provide you with our knowledge expertise, equipment, information, guidelines and requirements to make your new HVAC system successful. Success is defined as a system that provides maximum energy savings, optimum comfort and longevity. Anything less is unacceptable.
We offer and require review of your application to select the correct size system that will provide the most efficient system for your budget. We provide online information to help you understand the various systems available and how their features add additional energy savings.
We will review your present duct system to determine if it is sized and design correctly.
We provide a warranty validation form to be completed by your installer to be completed and returned to us upon completion confirming your system has been installed and is operating at peak performance.
The Factory Warranties in our industry can only be supported by an authorized factory dealer or distributor. They are the source for all warranty support and not the manufacturer. If a seller is not affiliated with the manufacturer they cannot legitimately state they provide the Authorized Factory Warranty of the products they advertise. And no warranty is supported by any Manufacturer, Distributor or Dealer if there is no evidence of a properly sized and installed system. DESCO Energy provides you with indisputable methods of sizing and installation in accordance with industry standards and exceed all manufacturers' requirements.

When considering doing your own system installation there are established guidelines and requirements to assist you in making the most successful installation. Success as measured in energy efficiency, reduced energy consumption and equipment longevity.
The first area of concern is the size and type of system to chose. This is where the most common mistake is made resulting in oversized equipment. Oversizing of systems is the main cause of poor comfort, excessive energy consumption, increased warranty claims and premature equipment failures. Forget about the old American adage and culture that believes "Bigger is better" and "If a little is good than a whole lot more should be great!" The worst mistake is to put in a larger than required system.
To begin make certain the system you select is the right size.
How do I determine which size system would be the right size for me?
DESCO Energy provides a detailed online sizing form. Using Manual J, the industry accepted standard for determining the exact amount of heating and cooling BTUs we provide you with a final requirement. Based on that requirement the correct size system can be selected. For example your house may need 36,780 BTUs of cooling and 79,456 BTUs of heating. The cooling BTUs result will also show you how much latent cooling and sensible cooling will be required. Latent cooling is the amount of cooling for removing moisture and sensible cooling is the amount of cooling required to lower the temperature to a desired indoor temperature when the outside temperature is at the highest load. The highest outdoor load or often referred to as the summer design temperature is specific to each region of the country. Then the energy losses are included which are a result of the size of the house, thermal efficiency from walls, ceilings and floors insulation as well as window sizes, types and location, doors, ceiling heights, square footage and other energy gains. These factors are then calculated to determine the final cooling loads. Heating loads are determined by the winter outdoor design temperature as well as the house energy efficiency factors to arrive at a final heating load. As you can see this is an involved process of calculations and when performed correctly will arrive at an accurate heating and cooling load.
What if I simply replace the system with the size system I presently have?
Since over 70% of existing systems are oversized the chances of arriving at an oversized system would be more likely. If you have also made changes to the house which have increased the thermal efficiency such as newer more efficient windows or doors or increased insulation, your house is more efficient and requires less heating and cooling. Selecting the system size based only on the present equipment capacities is a big mistake and your chances of having a successful installation are greatly diminished. The system size would be based on erroneous and obsolete information.
I have received several quotes from contractors and they all told me the same size system. So wouldn't I be safe using their recommendations?
The most difficult thing is to convince a homeowner their selection or the size selection made by several contractors is too large. Nobody wants a system that is not going to provide sufficient heating or cooling. Unless the contractors took measurements of the house and all the windows, doors etc. and performed an accurate Manual J calculation, their recommendations could and most probably are not accurate. It's very possible and happens all the time that a group of contractors in the same region are all using the same basic inaccurate rule of thumb to determine the size system they select. And the larger the system they can sell the more money they make. So if you want the system to be accurately sized, use our online sizing form. We use Manual J engineered and calculated sizing based on your local climate and your home's energy efficiency to determine the correct size and there's no guesswork. Although a contractor may defend their selection based on no customer complaining from insufficient heating or cooling, the fact that comfort levels are not what they could be and in the wake of that contractors path may be many prematurely failed systems which he has blamed on manufactures defects. If you are still not convinced go to the Department of Energy's website, HVAC industry websites as well as many HVAC manufacturers websites. They all warn homeowners about the abundant problem of system oversizing caused by contractors not taking the time to perform Manual J calculations.
Why should I trust your calculations over a local contractors recommendations? You're located in another region of the country and you've never even seen my house. The contractors have been here and saw what my house looked like. Certainly they have a more accurate idea of what size system I need than DESCO Energy, don't they?
The results of our online sizing are guaranteed to be accurate. When you purchase the recommended size system we provide after completing our online sizing form, we guarantee the system will perform to provide the cooling and heating requirements of the design outside temperatures. No we don't select equipment sizing based on a possible nuclear winter or that one in a hundred year period of extreme heating or cooling. If we did the equipment would be grossly oversized the other 99 years. One of our technical support team members provides more sizing of systems in one month than the average contractor performs in their entire careers. In one year we provide thousands of systems both locally and online. With that volume we can't afford to be wrong. In 34 years of business we have never had one compliant filed against us through the Better Business Bureau or any other source. To be honest we have had four systems in our entire history of 34 years that were sized incorrectly. We replaced those systems at no cost to those customers. To tell you we never make mistakes would not be the truth or believable. We feel we're good but we're not perfect. However in the past 15 years we have not had one system that was sized incorrectly either by over or under sizing. This is a record we work hard at to maintain. Accuracy is the most important part of determining the size system you will require.
How do I go to your online sizing form?
Click Here and you will be directed to a new window with our online sizing form. After you submit the online sizing form information you will receive an email verifying the information was received and processed. You will also be requested to call our Technical Support Team for a review of the results. The review process allows an opportunity to review the results for clarification. We respect your privacy and we do not make phone calls as a result of submitting the sizing form. You decide when to call us at your convenience. We will not intrude your privacy!
How much of the HVAC installation can I perform myself?
In most instances a skilled do it yourselfer can perform about 95% of the installation. No homeowner should attempt to do the final start up and check out of the system. This phase of the installation needs to be performed by a licensed installer. A homeowner can install ducting, place equipment in their respective locations, perform electrical wiring runs for high and low voltage lines where permitted by law, run refrigerant lines, install humidifiers, air filters, mount boilers, pumps, install floor heating or baseboard heating. soft solder water lines, run Pex tubing, installing condensate lines, etc. What should be performed by a qualified experienced installer is final wiring hook ups for power wiring and low voltage controls such as thermostats, air handlers, furnaces boilers etc., refrigerant line brazing, evacuation and leak checking of refrigerant lines, adjusting and checking of refrigerant charge, adding refrigerant, leak checking gas lines, final connection of gas lines, inspection and final assembly of venting and intake for furnaces and any and all other items that may be required by local codes. DESCO Energy will never sell any system or equipment to any homeowner who has no intention of employing the use of a qualified experienced licensed technician to perform the final hook up and start up. If this is your ultimate goal you should note that we do not provide any warranty or technical support for any system that has not been installed as per our required warranty validation form. We realize no other seller even mentions this issue but it is in your best interest to follow the guidelines and requirements we have established. This assures you of a system that will provide many years of trouble free service and maximum comfort and energy savings. There is a serious extremely high degree of danger if equipment is not installed correctly. Such dangers as carbon monoxide poisoning, suffocation, fire, electrical shock, serious water damage, pipes freezing and busting, personal injury in all forms are risks you impose upon yourself and your family or other occupants needlessly and foolishly in order to save a few dollars. It is so foolish not to follow our recommended guidelines in the name of saving a little more money. Realize you have already saved thousand of dollars by doing most of the installation yourself. But to do a complete installation without using a technician voids the warranty, places your loved ones at high risk without their consent and in situations that do cause serious property and bodily harm, the insurance company many times will deny any claims because you were breaking the law. Yes realize it is against federal, state and local laws to install refrigerant lines and in most areas to hook up gas furnaces as a homeowner. When an insurance company has an opportunity to deny a claim legitimately they will do so. There is absolutely no homeowner who is sufficiently experienced in doing their own installation without the assistance of a qualified experienced technician to perform the final start up and check out. If you were you'd most likely be in this business. Competitors don't mention the risks or potential problems that can arise nor do they provide guidelines or requirements. Is it because they don't realize the risks involved or because they don't care? You be the judge.
If you would like more details email us to request the warranty validation form.
Do you provide a list of contractors in my area to do the final start up and installation?
First we recommend looking for a qualified installer. The installer is the technician working for the contractor. They are not required to be a licensed contractor and we strongly recommend looking for a technician rather than a contractor. Contractors have their own brands of equipment they want to sell you and are generally not interested in installing equipment purchased elsewhere. The technicians working for contractors are almost always eager to do side jobs and you save even more. It is a qualified technician of your choice, not ours. We refrain form recommending installers due to past problems of inconsistencies and performance. As well we have absolutely no control of the contractors or installers who sign up for the preferred installer list. We do not want to give the impression of endorsing any installer to which a customer may mistakably think came with our blessing and then turns out to be everybody's worst nightmare. The best way to find a qualified installer is to network through friends and family, ask for referrals at local supply houses or simply stop a service technician next time you see one and talk to them. By all means interview the installer carefully about the methods and procedures they use, their time frame and make certain they come insured so you are protected. Most importantly get it in writing. For more information on how to locate a qualified installer see our website. EBay rules do not permit us to provide links to our website form any ad but doing a Google search for DESCO Energy and we'll be right there.
How do I know what parts of an installation I can perform and the installer needs to perform?
First in all areas of the country it is illegal for anyone to handle refrigerants that does not possess a license as issued by the Environmental Protection Agency. Secondly you do not have the tools and equipment to provide proper evacuation and to measure the correct refrigerant charge. Most importantly refrigerant lines are required to be brazed with a nitrogen purge, an operation that requires experienced skill levels and equipment. The typical homeowner regardless of skills is not prepared to have the correct tools or experience to perform these tasks successfully. Some misguided homeowners may attempt to soft solder refrigerant lines and use other unacceptable methods in an attempt to hook up their own system complete without the use of a qualified technician. Penny wise and pound foolish, they only cheat themselves out of longevity, efficient operation and warranty protection. DESCO Energy provides a warranty validation form that is required to be filled out by a qualified licensed technician of your choice. The form must be returned to us within 60 days of purchase of the system for warranty protection.

How do I know which system is best for me? Natural gas, fuel oil, propane and now electric costs are skyrocketing. Which system is going to be the most cost effective and what energy is the best deal?
Natural gas prices will continue to fluctuate the same as oil prices have for years because every day we are importing more and more of our natural gas as our demand outstrips our supply. As with fuel oil you can expect a lowering of prices when you least need it and higher prices over the winter. Unlike fuel oil, natural gas can't be stored so as the prices fluctuate another factor will be certain. As demand increases so will costs. Some natural gas customers bombarded by natural gas increases made a mistake by switching to a heat pump system to only now see electric costs increase 50-78% in various regions across the country. Baltimore Gas and Electric recently raised prices 74% and further increases will be likely. Other providers in the mid Atlantic region are to follow suit as these providers generate power form fuel oil and natural gas. What needs to be understood that as fuel prices increase electric power derived from hose same fuels and even coal will also be increasing. As fuel users switch from one fuel to another the increased demand will inevitably cause price increases no matter what direction you turn.
Here are some basic guidelines. The most cost effective heating and cooling system is geothermal but the installation costs are enormous making this a poor payback - generally 15 to over 20 years. In most instances a geothermal system doesn't leave much room for the do it yourselfer. Only if you can get extremely creative it might be possible to cut those costs in less than half.
For comfort and cost effectiveness radiant floor heating or baseboard with proper zoning make hot water heating an excellent choice. But here again high installation costs make this system a 6 to 12 year payback depending on how much of the installation you perform.
If you have natural gas consider a dual fuel system. A dual fuel system offers an excellent opportunity to reduce heating fuel costs another 20%. Dual fuel also adds protection against one energy source over another and provides choices. A dual fuel system is one that combines a fossil fuel furnace with a heat pump. The heat pump is most efficient between outdoor temperatures of 35 to 70 degrees. As the outdoor temperature falls the more efficient fossil fuel furnace operates. Most dual fuel systems provide an ultra efficient gas furnace with a heat pump. There are also fuel oil and propane furnaces in conjunction with a heat pump. Dual fuel systems cost slightly more than the fossil fuel furnace with air conditioning. However the cost difference provides a quick payback of less than one heating season by the lowered heating costs.
How much can I reasonably expect to save by making a heating and air conditioning system a Do It Yourself project?
The skilled homeowner who anticipates he can do the maximum amount of the installation as permitted by codes and laws and can perform 95% of the installation can expect to save 70% off the price of a contractor quoted installation. Further the average homeowner tells us they saved at least 50% off their energy costs. Taking a typical installation or replacement that is contractor quoted at $7,000 and with annual energy consumption at $3,400, the skilled do it yourselfer will save $4,900 for the installation and $1,700 in energy costs. That is a grand total savings of $6,600. In this equation the homeowner paid DESCO Energy $2,100 for the equipment and saved $6,600 for a payback of period of less than 4 months. Looking at this same investment strictly from a payback versus energy costs saved the homeowner will see a 15 month payback. So no matter how you do the math, there is no better payback you will find on any investment such as you're heating and cooling system.
Looking at the homeowner who isn't proficient at do it yourself projects and elects to only do the bare minimum which in most equations this amounts to 30% saved off of a contractor quoted price or as in the above example 30% of $7,000 or $2,100. This no so proficient homeowner will still enjoy the same energy savings as above or $1,700. This homeowner will see a total savings including contractor savings and energy of $3,800. He paid DESCO Energy $2,100 and the installer $2,800 for a total investment of $4,900. His savings will be $2,100 for the installation and $1,700 in energy costs for a total first year savings of $3,900 from an investment of $4,900 or a payback period of 15 months or 1 year and 3 months. From an energy savings comparison only of $1,700 from an investment of $4,900 his payback will be 35 months or slightly less than 3 years.
In review of our homeowner who only uses contractors and has no involvement the payback based on energy savings would be $7,000 against $1,700 annual energy costs for a payback period of 4 years and 1 month.
The information provided above is a result of surveys we performed from customers and their results. Naturally the more you do the more you save and the savings are significant. Most homeowners would like to upgrade their heating and cooling systems but with the average investment showing only 4 to 7 years payback, it isn't cost effective. But when a homeowner sees a payback of two years or less then that investment becomes worthwhile. And as energy costs continue to skyrocket, the investment becomes even more significant. Remember the best investment you can make isn't on Wall Street, it's on your street in your heating and cooling system. Where else could you make an investment that guarantees a return of two years or less and continues to pay dividends of 25% thereafter? As energy costs increase your investment continues to provide even greater returns. If any homeowner was given that type of investment opportunity they would be lined up around the nation. For over 80% of homeowners this same investment opportunity exists right in your house today.
Speaking of investments what are these tax credits all about?
The new energy tax credit bill provides for tax credits or rebates to homeowners primary residences as an incentive to improve the efficiency of your home. In 2007 Energy Tax Credits ended for existing homes but continues through 2008 for new home construction only. Included is insulation, windows and of course heating and cooling equipment. The other improvements such as windows and insulation are based on a percentage of the cost. Heating and cooling systems are based on a flat amount. Furnaces with 95% or higher efficiencies receive a $150 tax credit. Variable speed fan blowers receive a $50 tax credit. Split cooling systems and heat pumps of 15 Seer or Heat Pumps with 9 HSPF and a 12.5 EER are eligible for a $300 tax credit. Packaged heat pumps and cooling systems of 14 Seer and 12 EER are also eligible for a $300 tax credit. A tax credit is more valuable than a deduction in that the credit is matched dollar for dollar while a deduction is only a percentage of the given amount. To be legible for the tax credits the system and matched components must all be ARI certified and rated. There are numerous misleading ads out there where an advertiser exaggerated the efficiency ratings to promote a sale and there is no official rating of the system so there won't be a tax credit either. These sellers who proclaim honesty know what are the worst offenders offering 93% furnaces and plagiarizing manufacturers specifications to 96% or 15 Seer systems that aren't even rated or have no ARI match up. The only thing we can figure out is these sellers probably don't plan on being around next year when their customers go to file their income taxes and find out to their dismay the system they purchased isn't eligible for any tax credit.

I'm building a new house. Where should I begin?
New home construction is an excellent opportunity to provide the most energy efficient system. When new homeowners purchase a new home from a builder they are getting the cheapest builder grade low end model installed at the lowest possible price.
\The average homeowner will focus on the color the kitchen cabinets and spend their entire focus on selecting the proper cabinets, etc. Then when it comes to the item that will consume the largest part of their monthly budget, their heating and cooling system, the only question they may ask is the name of the manufacturer. With little or no regard for the efficiency or features of the system they think that because it is a name brand they recognize that it is dependable and efficient. Nothing could be further form the truth. If a homeowner realized how little the builder pays the installer and that the system selected was the lowest and cheapest model they could purchase and still keep it a name brand, homeowners wouldn't have to wait until their first heating season to realize they got exactly what they paid for.

What about the warranties? How can you provide warranty protection when we are located in another state from DESCO Energy? Goodman states there is no warranty on products ordered over the internet. How then do we have warranty protection?
First it is extremely important to understand how warranties are handled on do it yourself installations versus contractor installations. When you have a contractor perform your installation it is the responsibility of that contractor to provide the warranty service and support after the sale. The manufacturer provides warranty support to the contractor who in turn provides warranty support to the homeowner. The manufacturer does not provide warranty support directly to the homeowner. The only time a manufacturer may get involved is when the contractor fails to properly service the equipment via the terms of the warranty because the contractor is no longer in business, is incompetent, can't fix the problem or fails to respond. In these circumstances the manufacturer may elect to contact their distributor in the area to locate another dealer or have their field representative provide the warranty support. Unless the homeowner purchased a labor contract from the manufacturer the only obligation the manufacturer will have is to provide warranty parts.
When you purchase a system online you are acting as your own contractor. To purchase at wholesale you do not have the same warranty support you may have if you had a contractor perform the installation. You as the contractor must realize there is no longer free labor support. You will receive the equivalent warranty from DESCO Energy that a contractor receives from DESCO Energy. We will provide warranty coverage for parts as shown in the manufacturers warranty. However because we provide certain coverage that extends beyond the manufacturers standard warranties it is not correct for us to say the warranty protection we provide is the standard manufacturers warranty. For example on the Goodman 13 Seer heat pumps and air conditioning systems the standard factory warranty is only 5 years parts including the compressor. But DESCO Energy provides an extended Goodman warranty that includes a 99 year compressor warranty and 10 years on all parts.
On all equipment the warranty protection and coverage is the responsibility of DESCO Energy. Goodman as well as all other HVAC manufacturers do not provide any warranty coverage direct to any homeowner. DESCO Energy will always be your source for warranty coverage for the entire life of the warranty. Any parts needed to be replaced under the terms of the warranty must be returned to DESCO Energy. Replacements parts are sent immediately for any request and must be prepaid including shipping. Shipping of new replacement parts and their return to us shall be the responsibility of the homeowner or end user. In warranties where the entire unit shall be replaced as a result of any heat exchanger failures, the cost to return the item, labor to replace and the cost to ship the new replacement furnace shall be the responsibility of the homeowner or purchaser. Lifetime warranties are only applicable to first time purchaser and are non transferable. Lifetime warranties revert to 20 year coverage for secondary transfer to other parties.
In the event of warranty parts we require the system must have been installed correctly as evidenced by the return receipt of the warranty validation form provided.
Because we provide coverage beyond the factory warranties and because labor allowances are granted in specific situations the warranty coverage is more than the factory warranty and is therefore the sole responsibility of this seller, DESCO Energy. At no time shall the warranty coverage offered for all products we provide be less than the equivalent Goodman factory warranty.
Warranty and Installer Requirements
Please note that for any and all warranty support DESCO Energy requires that the final hook up of refrigerant lines and wiring as well as check out of the system must be performed by a licensed professional installer (Not necessarily a Contractor). In fact we strongly recommend not to look for a contractor as they have their brands and they're not ever thrilled about a request to install equipment that was purchased elsewhere at a cost of less than what they may pay. We provide a Warranty Validation Form that must be completed by your licensed professional installer and returned to us within 60 days of purchase of system. Failure to return this form to us within that time frame will result in voiding any warranty parts and technical support. An extension of the time frame of 60 days must be made in writing to us but it can be no longer than 100 days from date of purchase. Remember no HVAC manufacturer provides warranty or technical support direct to the homeowner and it is the total responsibility of the seller to provide warranty and technical support to you. That is why it is most important to purchase your HVAC system from a supplier that is a real brick and mortar operation with over 35 years in business and is listed and has a direct affiliation with the manufacturer. DESCO Energy is the only distributor that is listed on Goodman's website.
Also to know if the system you are purchasing is the correct size please go to our online sizing form Click Here If you are simply replacing an existing system or if you are adding air conditioning don't guess and don't take a contractors advise. We provide accurate guaranteed sizing and we're the only online source providing this service at no charge. Plus it's guaranteed. We size thousands of systems annually and we can't afford to be wrong or to make the mistake of under or oversizing your system which is the main cause of premature equipment failures, poor comfort and wasted energy. DESCO Energy sizes more systems in one month than the majority of HVAC contractors may do in their entire careers using the latest Manual J system and a very sophisticated computer software designed for your specific house in your area of the country.
Any homeowner who attempts to do their own complete installation is not properly skilled nor do they have the proper test equipment and tools to do a complete installation. Most homeowners can do up to 90 to 95% of the installation but the final part and check out must be performed by a licensed installer. An installer is the technician working for a contractor and most installers are more than eager to do work on the side. How is my system shipped?
All small item orders such as thermostats, humidifiers, air filters or single small component orders are shipped UPS. However if your order is for a complete system and small ancillary items, they shall all be packed together and sent through our carrier - ABF. Our common carrier ABF, also referred to as a trucking company has shipping terminals located throughout the United States. The most economical means of shipping any system is to the terminal closest to you for your pick up. Shipping costs can range anywhere from $118 to $300 on average depending on your location and the items being shipped. For example furnaces and boilers are less expensive to ship than air conditioning or heat pumps. This has to do with the classification of the item's) being shipped.
We have negotiated our contract with the shipper for a 70% discount to most locations. The shipping costs are always paid to ABF direct and not to DESCO Energy when you pick up your shipment at the terminal or if you elect to have home delivery. You do not pay any penalty for freight collect charges and only the exact amount of discounted shipping costs.
Most items we advertise are in stock at our warehouse. With shipping times you can estimate any order will take about a week or more for delivery again depending on your location.
In the shipping of any item(s) it is the responsibility of the customer to inspect all items before signing the receipt from the shipper. It is very important to open all boxes and packages and inspect for hidden damages because you cannot go back and claim damages once you have signed. To settle a claim with any carrier can take up to 60 days and as with any damage claim can be quite time consuming. DESCO Energy does offer a $40 insurance claim policy. In the event your shipment should arrive damaged you will immediately notify the shipper as well as DESCO Energy and make note of such damage on the receipt. If the entire shipment is damaged, refuse the entire shipment. If only part of the shipment is damaged or if the damage is slight, take the items that are satisfactory and reject those that aren't. For slight damage simply make note of the damage and accept the order. If you purchase the insurance we will then settle the claim with you within 7 days and go back on your behalf and file a damage claim with the shipper. However note that at no time does our policy or the shippers cover hidden damages. For this reason it is extremely important to inspect all items before signing for them. Rarely do we ever have shipping damage and if you check our feedback customers comment about how well our shipping department packs their orders. Over the years we have learned how to pack to avoid most shipping damage. For this reason it is rare to have a shipping damage claim. But if you purchase the additional insurance and have a problem you'll be glad you did.
If you live in the Mid Atlantic region you may also choose to pick up your equipment. All systems such as furnaces, heat pumps boilers, air conditioners receive a $25 discount when you pick up at our warehouse.

How does Goodman stand up against the competition?
Goodman is incredibly now the single largest brand of residential heating and cooling in the nation. Goodman started out 26 years ago by Harold Goodman purchasing other heating and air conditioning companies. Goodman's most recent purchase 6 years ago was Amana. And last year Goodman went from the largest privately held HVAC manufacturer to a public company.
The changes made both in technology of manufacturing and products has put Goodman at the forefront of the HVAC industry. Although Goodman is not the most known brand to homeowners, they have gained their market share by marketing to their contractor base. It was a back door approach that has written a new chapter on how a new emerging manufacturer can gain major market share in an age old industry dominated by long standing and established companies. Gaining second place market share without spending incredible sums of money on marketing. It would have been impossible for Goodman to gain the market share they have today employing the standard advertising against other more well known manufacturers. How did they do it? By marketing directly to the HVAC contractors with a quality product line at a great price with the strongest warranties in the industry, Goodman has made themselves a brand that today other major manufacturers fear and work diligently to compete against.
The acquisition of the Amana line brought a remarkable hi tech product line that other manufacturers can't match both in terms of technology, warranty and price. For example the new heat pumps are built better, have higher efficiencies and have been the best price on the market. In particular is a new modular variable speed air handler which has also been added to this year's product line. In addition DESCO Energy provides a 99 year and 10 year Goodman warranty.
For natural gas users the new GMV95 gas furnace with 2 stages and variable speed has all the latest features for maximum comfort, energy savings and a price that can't be touched by competitors. The GMV95 is eligible for a $200 tax credit plus having such advanced features as intelligent igniter technology and auto comfort mode. Most other major manufacturers do not have a competing 95% or higher furnace that is eligible for the energy tax credit rebate, yet also provide all the other energy and comfort enhancing features. As though that wasn't enough there is also a ten year total replacement warranty in the event of a heat exchanger failure, lifetime heat exchanger warranty and five years on all other parts. The new GMV95 furnace comes at a price which is less than other major manufacturers sell their lesser efficiency furnaces with no variable speed and no other energy and comfort features and a low end warranty. And some the leading known brand name manufacturers are still using clam shell heat exchangers instead of the longer lasting more efficient tubular heat exchanger technology as in the new GMV95.
Originally Goodman was known for many years as the leader in lower priced base line equipment without any frills or features. Today Goodman has shown homeowners and the entire industry they can also produce the high end systems with more features and technology than any other leading manufacturer at a price that can't be touched. So if you ever think Goodman's prices are high, take a look at the others and you'll soon appreciate what Goodman offers in technology, comfort, price and warranty.
If the terms variable speed, auto comfort mode, igniter technology, etc. seem foreign to you, we recommend visiting DESCO Energy's new more comprehensive website where these features are explained in complete detail. There you will not only learn what the features do but the incredible changes they provide in your comfort levels and energy consumption.
