EducationThe 4 C's of DiamondsRight before you decide to buy that special someone a diamond that symbolizes your long-lasting commitment, you just might want to consider the 4 C's. A quality diamond that will stand the test of time and keep both you and your partner smiling, must be measured by Cut, Carat, Color and Clarity. CutSimply put, the cut determines its sparkle - if your diamond doesn?t sparkle well in the light, it isn?t cut well. The cut of a diamond, contrary to what many think, really has nothing to do with its shape but rather the way it reflects light, which affects the diamond?s brightness, brilliance and dispersion. Poorly cut diamonds such as poor symmetry, will greatly affect the quality of light return. It comes as no surprise therefore, that gemologists consider the aspect of cut to be the most important. You may have perfect color and clarity, but if you have a poor cut then you have a diamond with questionable quality. A number of grading methods have formulated to help buyers fully understand the cut of a certain diamond. Generally speaking, the grades are Ideal, Premium, Very Good, Good, Fair and Poor. Ideal cut diamonds, a category that applies only to round diamonds, means the diamond has been cut to maximize its brilliance, typically offering a great deal of dispersion, or ‘fire’. Premium cut diamonds, often equal to any Ideal cut diamond, also offer the same ‘fire’, but for often lower prices. Very Good cut diamonds reflect most of the light that enter them and are characterized by the fact that they were cut outside preferred diamond proportions in order to create a larger diamond. Good cut diamonds, like the Very Good cut category, prefers size over cutting off extra weight to create a premium cut rock. Fair and Poor cut diamonds reflect only a small proportion of light and have been cut to maximize carat weight. CaratThe aspect of Carats is pretty straightforward. Carat, not to be confused with the word “Karat”, which determines the purity of gold, is the measuring unit of the diamond weight and therefore represents its size. One Carat has 100 points, and is equal to 200 milligrams. Larger diamonds, those with increased carat size, are hard to come by since the natural materials required are found in small amounts, a fact that makes the value of the stone increase proportionally as the weight of the stone rises. The carat aspect is actually the easiest of the 4 C's to determine as it?s really a black or white issue. While it may not be the most important of the C's, but it should be a main concern when making a purchase. Large diamonds have always been popular, but keep in mind that bigger isn?t always better. Remember “Cut”? ColorThe best color for a diamond is no color at all, and while many diamonds actually seem colorless, or white, they may in fact have a hint of yellow or brown in them. The reason lack of color is so important, is that just like a clear window, it lets more light pass through and gives of more brilliance and ‘fire’. The natural formation process of a diamond creates only a few truly colorless diamonds, making these rarities highly valuable and thus obviously more expensive than others. The grading method for color start with the letter “D”, which indicates that the diamond is colorless, and ends with the letter “Z”, which indicates a visible yellowish color. To be precise, “D-F” is colorless, “G-J” is near colorless, “K-M” is faint yellow, “N-R” is very light yellow and “S-Z” closes the list, representing “light yellow”. While obviously diamonds graded “D-F” are the most natural and desirable due to their rarity, it should be understood that to the untrained eye, diamonds graded “G-J” are just as colorless, making them an excellent buying option. ClarityClarity is all about the measure of the internal and external flaws of a diamond. Having increased clarity on a diamond means a minimum amount of feathers, which are tiny factures within the diamond that have somewhat of a feathery appearance. A small amount or complete lack of feathers, either by nature or by innovative enhancement methods, will allow the diamond to easily reflect light and sparkle, naturally raising its value dramatically. You can read more about Diamond Hunters? methods to create clarity enhanced diamonds here. While there are a few institutes that use different systems, the widely renowned GIA (Gemological Institute of America) determines that there are 7 levels on the grading scale for clarity: Flawless, Internally Flawless, Very, Very Slightly included, Very Slightly included, Slightly included and Included. Flawless (FL) means that the diamond has no feathers or any type of blemish. Internally Flawless (IF) means that feathers and blemishes are found only on the surface. Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS) means have minor feathers that are hardly visible only under 10x magnification. Very Slightly Included (VS) means fairly visible feathers under 10x magnification. This level has two sub categories (VS1 and VS2), and VS1 has a higher clarity grade than VS2. Slightly Included (SI) means the diamond has visible feathers under 10x magnification. This level has two sub categories (SI1 and SI2), and SI1 has a higher clarity grade than SI2. As you can see, there is quite a lot to think about before choosing a diamond. You are more than welcome to browse the site and find a diamond that is perfect for you or contact us and tell us what you?re looking for! Clarity Enhanced DiamondsIt is truly rare when diamonds are mined from the ground and found without imperfections. These flaws, or feathers, cause the diamond to lose a great amount if its clarity, resulting in light being reflected off in many directions, and not facet to facet as it should. Thanks to the advanced clarity enhancement technology by Diamond Hunters, you now can own a genuine, natural diamond that has great value and unparallel clarity. What are Clarity Enhanced Diamonds?Clarity enhanced diamonds by Diamond Hunters are 100% natural diamonds, True, these diamonds have in fact been enhanced, but by utilizing our revolutionary laser enhancing and filling process, no visual trace is left and no weight is added. You are left with a genuine rock, but one that looks much better, has a higher value yet much lower price than non-enhanced diamonds. Better appearance, better performanceDiamond Hunters' clarity enhancement process, not only improves the diamond's appearance, but also leaves it as strong as it was before and most importantly - allows light to bounce around inside the diamond.
