Ruffian was my favorite filly ever. She was gorgeous, huge, ran like a demon. This DVD tells her story, and the extra features are great - right up my alley. All sorts of details from the director.

I saw the 2-hr film and the making of the film on TV as presented by ESPN. Its an excellant view into the lives of Ruffian and those people around her that came to love her. Much like Titanic, we already know the tragic ending, but the getting there and why of it all is very compelling in this case, so tissues will be required. During the last 30 years, I thought I knew alot about Ruffian before this movie, but now I see that she was even more unique and special than my imagination allowed. I can remember seeing Ruffian (on TV) race and break down in the mid 1970s, gut wrenching as that was, and thought I'd never want to see another horse race again in my life. For the most part, I thought all the people involved in racing were money-hungry and were cruel to the race horses, not caring about the consequences of bad human decisions. But real life stories of Seabiscuit and Barbaro, taught me that some people DO love their horses, and would spare no expense in providing the best in life for their horses. So I give Ruffian and its makers (including excellent and heart-felt, moving performances of the cast) a well deserved 'A+' grade. Similiar to "Dreamer" starring Kurt Russell, once you see all of the special effects explained and used in this film, you'll find that you can bear the 'wreck' scenes much better, because you'll know that NO real horse was injured during the filming! A jockey friend says "Trying to stop a race horse in the middle of a race on any track is like trying to stop a semi-truck on an icy road and the front wheel fell off at 70 MPH! You barely can slow them down, much less actually stop them, so any jock that does stop the horse is using super-human strength." Ron Semiao, Sr Vice President over ESPN Original Entertainment said: "Good movies tend to take viewers on an emotional journey and Ruffian's story seems to have all the arcs that make a story compelling. Her breakdown is something that unfortunately happened and it would be disingenuous to viewers to ignore it. But that's a SMALL part of her entire story. I think what we want people to take away is the recognition of how terrific a horse Ruffian was, and how her spirit lives on." This is one I'll definitely add to my film library. ___________________________________________________________ Special Note: "... Ruffian is the first horse ever in history to be buried at one of the New York Race Association's tracks—Aqueduct, Saratoga, Belmont." Her grave site is beautifully marked at Belmont. http://www.americanheritage.com/articles/magazine/ah/1993/5/1993_5_46.shtml This link also includes follow-up info about "What ever happened to ... after the race?" One of the great ones. Just love movies about horse racing and all that it takes to be a race horse and the ones who own and train them.
