Make: Barnes drill company
This is an old flat belt gap bed lathe I bought as a package deal. I used this to do driveshafts with. I believe this is a Barnes Drill Company Lathe, but it doesn't have any other type of name plate to identify it. It does have a dealer plate indicating it came from Pittsburgh, Pa. The bed length is 6ft before it is extended out. There is a large ratchet lever that goes on a lead screw that goes throught the center of the lathe to bring the bed out. It has a tailstock and a steady rest. There are 6 feed speeds, but I don't have any change gears for threading. The swing is 15" or 16" before the bed is moved out. It comes with a 4 jaw chuck that has locks on the back that allow you to operate the jaws independent or scroll together in any setup, (ie 2 and 2 or 3 and 1). The motor is only rated at 1hp but is huge. It has brushes that engage when it starts, but once its up to speed they kick out and it runs on induction. Based on the plates on the motor I think its around 100 or so years old. The bar that runs across the top engages a clutch on the back so the motor doesn't start the chuck under load. The cross slide on the top for the tool post when removed has the dovetail below the surface of the top of the saddle. The saddle has t-slots on all 4 corners to give you a flat surface to mount large work onto. I think the through hole is 1 3/8" through the spindle. I have an extra Kwikway boring bar that is 1 1/4" diameter that I will let go with it for line boring. I have bars from 60"- 80". This is a very well built lathe for as old as it is. I need the room for new equipment other wise I'd keep it. I do not want to see this lathe go to waste. If your local, I have a rollback and can deliver for a fee. If you have any questions, I'm in my shop daily from 9-6 EST. Thanks, 330-553-0194.
