SPOILER! This movie is one of the more light-hearted Holocaust films to come out of Europe (or anywhere for that matter). Catherine Deneuve is a stage actress married to a Jewish director who has decided to wait out the Nazi occupation of Paris by hiding in his theater. He tries to escape to the South of France to Spain and then the US, but his plans are for naught when the Nazis extend their grip on France. While there are plenty of tense moments and the couple always seems to be on the verge of discovery, they are not found out and survive. For the most part, the "good guys" win and the collaborationists get their comeuppance. There is no graphic camp scenes, no gut-wrenching deportations, but plenty of tension as the couple always fear being found out. as Deneuve's character fights her growing attraction to her leading man, there is also plenty of romantic tension. If you want a more lighthearted, heartwarming perspective on the Nazi occupation of Europe and the torment to which they subjected Jews and others, this is a beautifully acted and produced film.Read full review
