This attractive, ca1905 John Wieland Brewing Company Advertising Tray is not a reproduction, reissue or restrike but is an original ca1905 Serving Tray manufactured by Kaufmann & Strauss Co. for the John Wieland Brewing Company to advertise their Extra Pale Lager Beer.
As an immigrant from Germany in 1849, John Wieland first settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania but in 1851, he set out for California where he mined enough gold along the South Fork of the Yuba River to move to San Francisco and go into the baking business. Wieland subsequently bought into the Philadelphia Brewery, a thriving San Francisco concern, finally becoming its sole owner and building it into the most successful and largest business of its kind on the Pacific Coast. He had few years to enjoy his success, for in 1885 his home caught fire and Wieland and several members of his family died in the blaze. John Wieland was only 55 years old.
This very rare and wonderful, Pre-Prohibition Tin Lithograph San Francisco, California Brewery Beer Advertising Tray is in very good condition. The colors are bright and vibrant and the Tray displays very nicely. There is no significant wear, no surface loss or surface blemishes to the image area. The Tray exhibits a small dent at approx. 10 o'clock on the edge of the surface area and 2 small holes on each side of the raised rim (at 3 and 9 o'clock) which were likely used to mount the Tray on a barroom wall. The Tray has never been restored, repaired or altered in any way and the surface is 100% original and VERY attractive. Overall this is a very attractive example of this rare and beautiful California Brewery Serving Tray.
