Very rare and very beautiful, original, ca1770, Copper Plate Engraved Portrait of the celebrated French Naval Officer and participant in the French and Indian War in North America Louis Joseph Beaussier De L'Isle. This outstanding, Engraved Portrait is fully titled "Louis Joseph Beaussier De L'Isle / Chef de Escadre 1764 / Mort a Brest, 4 Juin 1765” (rough translation "Louis Joseph De L'Isle Beaussier / 1764 Rear Admiral / Death in Brest, June 4, 1765").

This very attractive, 18th century Portrait of Louis Joseph Beaussier De L'Isle measures approx. 7” by 8 1/4” (sheet size) including margins of 3/4" to 1 1/2" on each edge. The Image is a bust portrait Beaussier De L'Isle in oval with sailing ships in the background.

Louis-Joseph Beaussier de Lisle (1701 – June 4, 1765) was a career naval officer from one of the oldest families of Toulon, France. Beaussier had a long and varied naval career and by 1750 had made captain. He also was made a knight of the Order of Saint Louis. In 1755 he captained a ship that brought assistance to Canada and Louisbourg during the French and Indian War. In 1756, he brought six ships to Quebec carrying Montcalm and 1,300 troops as reinforcements. While returning to France, he engaged two English ships at Fort Louisbourg and badly damaged them. In 1758, he commanded a ship in a squadron that sailed to Louisbourg to assist governor Drucour in its defence. After the Siege of Louisbourg, the fortress fell to the English on July 27, 1758 and Beaussier was taken prisoner with the rest of the garrison.

Important Notes about Shipping Charges:

The amount quoted for Shipping & Handling is calculated by eBay and is equal to the EXACT amount charged by the Post Office plus a $1.00 "packing fee" - the $1.00 fee is our only compensation for the virgin packing materials we use on all of our professionally packaged boxes as well as our cost for the salaried help that does most of our packing - as I am sure you can see, we make NO profit on the Shipping charges and, in fact, our costs are usually greater than the $1.00 fee. Please contact us if there are any issues regarding the cost of shipping.
